RUTGERS NEWARK TOO MUCH FOR RAMAPO

Mahwah, NJ: The Lady Roadrunners played host to the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers Newark today in a NJAC women's basketball match-up. Ramapo posted a 61-42 loss to fall to 4-19 overall. The Roadrunners have yet to post a conference win falling to 0-11 after today's loss. Rutgers Newark improves to 18-5 overall, 7-4 in the conference.

Just over five minutes into the game, the Roadrunners held a slight 14-11 advantage after Brittany Hoffman (Belford, NJ) opened the game for Ramapo with a three-pointer and Tiffany China (West Orange, NJ), Beth Weinmann (Pompton Plains, NJ), and Camille Mammolite (Scotch Plains, NJ) each capitalized on their attempts. Bimpe Fageyinbo (Morris Plains, NJ) put Rutgers Newark on the scoreboard in the opening seconds and Nerlande Nicolas (Maplewood, NJ), Eni Fageyinbo (Morris Plains, NJ), and Sabrina Sanchez (Keasbey, NJ) all sunk a basket to trail the Roadrunners by three. The Scarlet Raiders tied the game at 14 at 13:23 with a three-point shot from Toni Roselli (Grafield, NJ) and Youngor Kehleay (Eatontown, NJ) put Rutgers Newark on top with a shot of her own from behind the arc. Kehleay followed with a jumper off a dish from Courtney Vacca (Wayne, NJ) giving the Scarlet Raptors a five point, 19-14 edge. Ramapo's Danielle Beam (Middletown, NJ) put in a basket of her own and Vacca sparked a mini, 5-0 run with two good free throws, putting the Scarlet Raiders up, 24-16. Hoffman sunk a jumper breaking the run and closing the gap to six with 4:33 left to play. Two free throws from Renee Edwards (Montville, NJ) and a jumper from Nicolas were the only baskets scored in the final four minutes of play. The Scarlet Raiders headed into the locker room with a 28-18 advantage, their biggest lead of the half, over Ramapo.

Rutgers Newark went 10-32 (31%) in the half behind Ramapo's 8-18 (44%). Ramapo committed 17 turnovers and forced ten on the Scarlet Raiders. Sanchez led the Scarlet Raiders with six first half points and Hoffman and China each recorded five for the Roadrunners.

At the opening of the second half, Ramapo was held to only one point in the first five minutes of play. The Scarlet Raiders sunk eight to open to a 38-19 lead with 14:45 left in the game. China finally got the Roadrunners on the board with a lay-up with 13:47 on the clock and Stephanie Ross (Nutley, NJ) answered with a jumper of her own to go on top, 40-21. Ramapo spent the next five minutes slowly chipping away on the Scarlet Raiders lead to come within 13 with 8:46 and again at 7:06, but Rutgers Newark put together a 5-0 and a 7-0 run to finish the day 19 points on top of the Roadrunners.

Hoffman was the only player hitting double-digit points wrapping up the day with 12 hitting 4-7 from the field, including two baskets from behind the arc. Sanchez led Rutgers Newark with nine points and Roselli recorded eight of her own. E. Fageyinbo pulled down a team high eight rebounds and Sanchez grabbed a team high three steals. Malika Gilliam (Roselle, NJ) dished out four assists for Ramapo. The Roadrunners combined hitting 16-40 (40%) of their shots while Rutgers Newark went 22-57 (40%) from the field. The Roadrunners had 24 turnovers in the game.

Ramapo returns to action on Wednesday, February 20th when they travel to William Paterson University for a 6:00 PM start while Rutgers Newark takes on William Paterson on Saturday, February 23rd in Newark in their final regular season match-up of the year at 5:30 PM.
