Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team played host to Hunter College in a non-conference match-up tonight at the Bradley Center in Mahwah posting a 57-50 victory to improve to 4-8 overall. The Hawks fall to 6-7 on the year.
After a sluggish start, 4-11 at 13:01, the Roadrunners fought back to tie the game at 20 with 2:43 left to play in the half. Ramapo went on a 6-0 run sparked by
Natasha Gross (Glen Rock, NJ) with a good jumper at 3:41, and took the lead with a second Gross jumper at 1:23, 24-22. Ramapo held on in the final minute to finish the half one point ahead of the Hawks, 26-25.
Gross led the team hitting 3-9, including 2-3 from the line, for eight points while grabbing team high three steals. Rookie
Malika Gilliam (Roselle, NJ) grabbed three steals of her own and senior
Kelly Bartz (Madison, NJ) sunk seven first half points while fellow senior
Keona Palmer (Port Reading, NJ) right behind her with six of her own. Palmer pulled down nine rebounds in the half. As a team the Roadrunners hit 8-37 (22%) behind Hunter's 10-23 (44%). Ramapo forced 16 Hawk turnovers only giving up eight of their own. For the Hawks, rookie Andrea Buckham (Queens, NY) led the way with seven points and 11 boards while Krystin Suarez (Staten Island, NY) sunk six of her own.
Ramapo opened the second half of play on a 4-0 run to jump ahead by five, 30-25, just two minutes into the second half. The Roadrunners spread their lead to as many as ten and held on to take the game, 57-50 for their fourth win of the season.
Gross finished on top of the Roadrunners sinking 18 total, 5-12 from the field and 8-9 from the line. Gross pulled down nine boards and Palmer grabbed a team high 11 in the win. Palmer and Bartz recorded nine and 13 points respectively. Gilliam finished the night with four steals and Gross led the way with three assists. Buckham wrapped up the night with a double-double shooting 7-13 for 15 points and grabbing a team high 15 rebounds. Suarez netted 14 points hitting 5-11 from the field including three three-pointers. Ramapo went 7-25 (28%) in the final 20 minutes for a game total 15-62 (24%) while Hunter hit 9-26 (35%) for a total 19 of 49 (39%).
