Union, N.J. – Kean University's Ebony Jackson (Newark, N.J.) had a steal and a basket with 11 seconds left in overtime to tie the game and Francine Bell (Orange, N.J.) knocked down one-of-two free throws with 7.6 seconds to lift the Cougars past Ramapo College, 68-67 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday evening. With the victory the Cougars improved to13-5 and 8-3 in the NJAC, while the Roadrunners fell to 6-11 and 2-9 in conference play.
In the overtime session, the teams traded the lead five times with neither side able to open up a lead larger than two points. A lay-up by
Natasha Gross (Glen Rock, N.J.) gave the Roadrunners their final lead at 67-65 with 41 seconds left. Bell then missed a jumper with 30 seconds remaining and the Roadrunners attempted to run out the clock, but Jackson was able to make the play of the game deflecting a pass away and picking up the loose ball to drive the length of the court for the game tying basket. On the subsequent inbounds play, Ramapo committed their 45th turnover of the game as Jackson picked the ball off again and dished it to Bell who got fouled in the lane. Bell made the first free throw but missed the second which gave Ramapo one last shot to win the game, however,
Tiffany China's (West Orange, N.J.) leaner in the lane rimmed out as time expired.
The Cougars appeared that they were going to win the game in regulation after Jackson sank a free throw to give Kean a 59-57 lead with 17 just seconds left. However, Ramapo broke the Cougars full court pressure and Khida Evens (Newark, N.J.) broke free for an uncontested lay-up to tie the game at 59-59 with 11 seconds left in regulation.
Overall in the game, Bell had her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Jackson added seven points and six steals. Sophomore center Chari Cooper (Paulsboro, N.J.) came off the bench and had a strong game with 17 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out late in the game.
For the Roadrunners, Evens led all scorers with 20 points, four rebounds and four steals, while
Kelly Bartz (Madison, N.J.) had 13 points and eight rebounds. China was the only other Ramapo player in double figures with 12 points.
