Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team extended their win streak to ten games and won their 20th game of the season with a non-conference sweep over SUNY New Paltz. The Roadrunners (20-3 overall) defeated the Hawks (7-7 overall) in game one 5-1 in eight innings and 5-3 in game two.
Game #1: Ramapo 5, New Paltz 1 | Eight Innings
New Paltz scored an unearned run in the top of the second inning and held the lead until the bottom of the sixth when the Roadrunners tied the game.
Kori Gargiulo led off the inning and hit her third home run of the season over the left field wall, 1-1. The score remained through the seventh inning sending the game into the eighth. New Paltz started their half of the inning with a runner on second base before she was picked off by Ramapo catcher
Hannah Hensler who fired a throw down to
Paley Sullivan for the tag.
Brooke Knight then induced a lineout to second base and a fly out to center field to end the top of the inning. In the bottom of half of the inning,
Lia Milsom was placed on second base for the Roadrunners. Clay'le Correa-Vanness put down a bunt single as Milsom moved to third before Gargiulo was intentionally walked. Following the first out of the inning, Sullivan stepped to the plate and hit the second pitch she saw over the left-center field fence for a walk-off grand slam and the 5-1 victory.
Knight (8-1) earned the win in relief for the Roadrunners as she struck out four, walked two and let up just one hit in the final four innings of action.
Gabby Morgan pitched the first four innings and struck out three, walked one and let up one hit and one unearned run.
Game #2: Ramapo 5, New Paltz 3
Ramapo got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first for an early lead.
Alex Hastings drew a walk with the bases loaded to force home Correa-Vanness before
Aimee Notaro plated the second run with a sac fly to left field. Gargiulo scored on the play for the 2-0 lead. In the second, Milsom reached on a fielder's choice and Correa-Vanness laced a single to left field before Gargiulo ripped a double down the left field line to bring home both runners, 4-0. In the sixth inning, New Paltz got three runs back on a three-run home run from Brianna Hardwick. The Roadrunners added their final run of the game in the bottom of the inning. Correa-Vanness and Hensler each put down bunt singles before Hastings knocked in Correa-Vanness with a two-out single up the middle to extend the lead, 5-3. The Hawks would put the game-tying runs on base with a single and hit by pitch as Ramapo got out of the jam with a pop fly foul out to first base and an infield pop out to second to end the game. Knight, who entered the game in the top of the second inning, earned the win in relief to move to 9-1 overall. She struck out two, walked two and surrendered five hits and three runs in six innings of work.
Mikayla McJilton started in the circle for Ramapo struck out two, walked none and let up just one hit in one inning of work.
Ramapo returns to action on Saturday, April 4th when they travel to Rutgers-Camden University for a 1pm NJAC doubleheader.
