FLATT, KOHLER LEAD RAMAPO OVER RUTGERS-NEWARK, 77-39

Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team defeated Rutgers-Newark University tonight in NJAC action, 77-39. The Roadrunners improve to 8-15 overall, 3-13 in the NJAC while the Scarlet Raiders now stand at 2-21 overall and 0-16 in the league.

The two teams traded baskets early in the first quarter before Lauren Flatt sank a three-pointer for the Roadrunners to take a 10-6 lead with 4:11 on the clock. That basket started an 8-3 run for Ramapo which gave them a 15-9 lead as it was capped off with a three-pointer from Denay Jones. A quick five-point run from Rutgers-Newark shrunk the lead to just one before Flatt sank another three-pointer while Vanessa Kohler scored a layup at the end of the quarter for a 20-14 lead. The Roadrunners would hold the Scarlet Raiders to under ten points in the final three quarters of action. In the second Ramapo opened the scoring with a three-pointer from Jocelyn Huancaya while later in the quarter Kohler collected another layup to give the team their first double digit lead of the game, 30-20 with 1:52 on the clock. Stella Sweeney scored on a jumper while Kohler converted on the free throw line to give Ramapo a 14-point lead with 34 seconds remaining. Quanajah Felder scored the final points of the quarter for either team on a jumper with 23 seconds on the clock as Ramapo led 34-22 at halftime.

Ramapo started the third quarter on an 8-0 run as Flatt sank back-to-back three-pointers and a jumper to take a 20-point lead, 42-22. The Roadrunners finished the last 3:50 of the quarter on a 9-4 run to go into the final quarter up 54-30. Flatt once again opened the quarter with a three-pointer which started a 20-2 run as Ramapo held a 74-32 lead with 1:49 remaining in the game. Ramapo capped off their scoring with a three-pointer from Jorie Boyle with 53 seconds on the clock. The Scarlet Raiders scored the final three points of the game as Ramapo posted the 77-39 home victory.

For the Roadrunners, Flatt led all scorers with 24 points in the game as she posted a career high in made three-pointers. Flatt also posted nine rebounds and two assists in the game. Kohler added 21 points to set a new career high while adding two steals, three assists and four rebounds. The team shot 39% (27-68) from the field, 37% (10-27) from beyond the three-point line and 72% (13-18) from the free throw line.

Jaielyn Alston led Rutgers-Newark with 11 points while she posted seven rebounds and one steal. Sanna Brodie added a double double of 10 points and 12 rebounds while she added three steals and two assists. The team shot 21% (13-62) from the field, 20% (2-10) from the three-point line and 52% (11-21) from the free throw line.

Ramapo returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 14th when they travel to Stockton University for a NJAC game scheduled for 1:00 PM.
