Mahwah, NJ: The #3 Ramapo College softball team scored late and held #6 Montclair State University scoreless as the Roadrunners won a NJAC Tournament first round game, 5-0. The Roadrunners improve to 29-7 overall while the Red Hawks now stand at 23-16 overall.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Roadrunners scored five unanswered runs.
Kori Gargiulo led off with an infield single before moving to second on a sac bunt from
Avery Kontura. With two outs,
Sophia Diaz drove in Gargiulo with a single to right field for the 1-0 lead. Diaz was lifted for pinch runner
Emily Reilly who later scored on a Red Hawk error off the bat of
Hannah Hensler, 2-0. Henlser was lifted for pinch runner Nia Murphy before
Lia Milsom laced a single to right-center field as Murphy advanced to third. Milsom moved to second on the relay throw to third to put runners on second and third with two out. Clay'le Correa-Vanness beat out an infield single to plate Murphy before Milsom scored as the throw to first sailed wide, 4-0.
Katie Rygiel then drilled a line drive double to the left-center field gap to plate Correa-Vanness to push the score, 5-0.
In the top of the seventh, Ramapo starting pitcher
Kassy Stefanski induced a flyout to center field, an infield pop-up to third and a strikeout swinging to end the game. Stefanski fanned a career high 15 in the game while she let up four hits and one walk. Gargiulo and Milsom each finished 2-3 with one run scored.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, May 3rd as they take on #2 the College of New Jersey. The NJAC Tournament Second Round is being hosted at Kean University.
