Patchogue, NY: The Ramapo College women's lacrosse team posted a road win over St. Joseph's College Long Island tonight, 15-13. The Roadrunners move to 3-0 overall with their third straight victory while the Golden Eagles now stand at 1-1 overall.
Each team scored four goals in the first quarter to head into the second tied at four. Ramapo added four goals in the second to St. Joe's three as the Roadrunners led 10-7 at halftime.
Erin Smeilus put Ramapo on the board in the first off of an assist from
Esme Espinosa before
Leah Whitney notched a goal off a pass from
Kassidy Baez. Baez and Smeilus combined to score the final two goals of the first for the 4-4 tie. The two teams traded goals as the game was tied at five and six before
Lauren Travaglini and Espinosa scored back-to-back goals for an 8-6 lead. The Golden Eagles came within one with a goal of their own before Whitney closed out the quarter once again with an assisted goal and a 9-7 lead. Travaglini, Baez, Whitney and Espinosa all scored in the third as they extended their lead 13-9. St. Joe's would score four unanswered goals to wrap up the third and tie the game at 13 all. In the fourth it was all Smeilus as she recorded a goal with 5:21 on the clock to take the lead for good off a pass from Baez before she added an insurance goal with 3:04 remaining as Espinosa earned the assist, 15-13.
Bethany Glaser and net-minder Daniella Indomencio each tallied five ground balls in the game while Glaser posted three caused turnovers and eight draw controls.
Ashley Czeczuga collected three caused turnovers and one ground ball while Travaglini was second on the team with seven caused turnovers and four ground balls. On offense, Whitney led the way with four goals while Travaglini, Smeilus and Baez each posted three goals in the game. Baez also tallied four assists for seven total points while Espinosa added two assists. Indomencio posted ten saves in goal in the complete game win for the Roadrunners. Ramapo held a small advantage in shots in the game 30-28 while the Roadrunner defense held the Golden Eagles to just one shot on goal in the final quarter of action.
Ramapo returns to action on Saturday, March 1st when they host Maritime College in a non-conference game starting at 1:00 PM.
