Mahwah, NJ: The William Paterson University men's soccer team held off a late surge by Ramapo College to come away with a 2-1 NJAC road win. The Pioneers move to 5-3-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners now stand at 7-3-1 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Davide Zamuner scored both goals for the Pioneers. He put the team on the board in the 11th minute of action with an assist from Niko Pierce. In the 34th minute, he added his second goal of the game after collecting a rebound off a save and hitting the back of the net for a 2-0 score. In the second half, WPU looked to score a third goal but it was called back for being offside. Ramapo would cut the lead in half with a goal from
Luigi Portillo. The Roadrunners were awarded a free-kick (65th minute) 25-yards out as Portillo scored his third goal of the season as his shot sailed into the top corner of the net. Ramapo had the opportunity to tie the game in the 75th minute as they were awarded a penalty kick but the WPU keeper made a diving save to his right to keep a one goal lead.
The Pioneers recorded 13 shots including nine on goal in the game while they recorded three corner kicks. The Roadrunners tallied 11 shots and eight on goal while they posted two corner kicks for the game.
Zachary Natt recorded seven saves for Ramapo while Luca Misko also posted seven in the win for WPU.
Ramapo returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Kean University for a NJAC game scheduled for 5:00 PM.
