Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team snapped a six-game losing skid with a win tonight over NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark University, 70-63. The Roadrunners move to 2-11 overall and 1-5 in the NJAC while the Scarlet Raiders now stand at 3-10 overall and 0-6 in the league.
Rutgers-Newark outscored Ramapo in the first two quarters as they held a 33-28 lead at halftime. The two teams battled in the third, each scoring 17 points while Ramapo dominated the fourth and final quarter. The Roadrunners outscored the Scarlet Raiders 25-13 enroute to the seven-point win.
Lauren Flatt led Ramapo with a season high 25 points which included two three-pointers and 12 points from the free throw line (12-14). Flatt also pulled down 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.
Jocelyn Huancaya tallied 14 points from the charity stripe (14-22) as she scored a career high 18 points while adding five steals, five rebounds and two assists.
Alison Ahern contributed with seven points, three blocks and five rebounds while
Brianna Smith led the way with 11 rebounds. Smith also posted six points, two steals and one assist.
Ramapo cut the lead to two a few times with about four minutes left in the game. A layup from Flatt started a 14-3 run to end the game. During the run, Ramapo would take the lead on a pair of free throws from Flatt with 2:08 on the clock, 61-60. Flatt would sink another pair of free throws following a technical foul to extend the lead, 63-60. The Roadrunners final seven points during the run came from the free throw line while the Scarlet Raiders sank a three-pointer. The Roadrunners shot 35% (15-42) from the field, 50% (2-4) from the three-point line and 69% (38-55) from the free throw line.
Arlenny Medina and Nicole Timario each scored 12 points for Rutgers-Newark. Medina added three steals, five rebounds and two assists while Timario added two rebounds, one block and one steal. Sanna Brodie contributed with eight points, four steals and five rebounds. The team shot 29% (20-69) from the field, 16% (2-12) from the three-point line and 77% (21-27) from the free throw line.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, Jan. 12th when they travel to Rowan University for a NJAC game at 1:00 PM.
