Newport News, VA: The #2 Ramapo College softball team bowed out of the Newport News NCAA Regional this afternoon suffering a 10-3 loss to #3 Pfeiffer University. The Roadrunners wrap up the season with their 10th tournament appearance and a 32-12 overall record. The Falcons (45-3) advance to the regional championship game and will need to defeat #1 Christopher Newport twice to advance to the NCAA Super Regional round.
The Falcons built a 7-0 lead heading into the sixth inning before Ramapo got on the board with one run in the sixth.
Avery Kontura led off the inning with a double to the right field wall before advancing to third on an infield groundout.
Mahogany Wheeler reached on an error which allowed Kontura to score to put Ramapo on the board. Pfeiffer plated three more runs in the top of the seventh to extend their lead, 10-1. With two outs in the seventh,
Katie Rygiel took the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for her fourth home run of the season. Kontura and
Avery Bartolomeo recorded back-to-back singles before Wheeler drove home Kontura with a single down the right field line. The Falcons induced a ground ball for a fielder's choice for the final out of the inning to secure the 10-3 win.
In the circle for the Falcons, Kali Morton (25-1) struck out five, walked two and surrendered eight hits and three runs. Emma Chopko led the team at the plate finishing 4-5 with two runs scored and three RBI.
For the Roadrunners,
Kassy Stefanski (14-5) suffered the loss in the circle, surrendering five hits and three runs in three innings of work.
Brooke Knight let up 11 hits and seven runs in four innings of relief. At the plate, Kontura led the way finishing 3-4 with two runs scored while Wheeler finished 2-4 with one RBI.
