Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's lacrosse team opened the 2024 season with a 19-12 win over visiting Saint Joseph's University Long Island. The Roadrunners move to 1-0 overall while the Golden Eagles move to 0-1 overall.
Ramapo went up 2-0 with two quick goals as
Kelly Griffin put the Roadrunners on the board with an unassisted goal (14:03) while
Erin Smeilus took a pass from
Esme Espinosa for the second goal (13:41). The Roadrunners never looked back as they held the lead for the entire game. Ramapo pulled away with back to back goals from Griffin and
Leah Whitney with 5:30 on the clock in the first, 4-1. SJLI scored two of their own at the end of the first to come within one of tying the game, 3-4. In the second, four Roadrunners scored five unanswered goals as Smeilus,
Kaylie Gresek, Griffin x2 and
Bethany Glaser all hit the back of the cage, 9-3. Each team scored one more goal at the end of the second as Ramapo went into halftime up, 10-4.
In the third, SJLI scored four goals to Ramapo's three. Emma Lange, Brooke Zecchini scored the first two to shrink the lead to just three, 7-10. Griffin and Espinosa each added unassisted goals as the Roadrunners led, 12-8. Glaser earned an assist from a goal by Smeilus before SJLI collected the final goal of the third as Ramapo led, 14-9. The Roadrunners added goals in the fourth from Glaser, Espinosa, Griffin before the team scored three unanswered to wrap up the game.
Lauren Travaglini, Espinosa and Glaser each scored as Ramapo came away with a 19-12 home win.
Griffin led the way with seven goals while Espinosa, Glaser and Smeilus each added three.
Daniella Indomenico, in the first collegiate game of her career, recorded ten saves for the Roadrunners.
Ramapo returns to action on Wednesday, when they host Farmingdale State College in a non-conference action at 5:00 PM.
