Jersey City, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team earned two victories today on the road over New Jersey City University, 12-1 in five innings & 2-0. The Roadrunners move to 7-11 overall and 7-9 in the NJAC while the Gothic Knights now stand at 0-16 overall/NJAC.
Game One
NJCU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before Ramapo tied the game in the top of the third.
Anna Messina singled and would come around to score on a NJCU error later in the inning to tie the game, 1-1.
The Roadrunners would take a big lead in the fifth scoring 11 runs on seven hits including a grand-slam and three-run home run from
Mahogany Wheeler and
Carley Layton respectively. Messina walked to lead off the fifth,
Krista Verrino doubled and
Carli Egan walked to load the bases for Wheeler. She belted her second homerun of the season for a 5-1 lead.
Avery Bartolomeo and
Thu Deo each walked before Layton belted her first homerun of the season to extend the RCNJ lead, 8-1.
Kasie McNichol drew a walk and stole second base before
Jaclyn Monaco laced a single up the middle which allowed McNichol to score, 9-1. Verrino then drove home Monaco with an RBI double before Egan drove home Verrino with a hard-hit single to right field, 12-1.
The Roadrunners held the Gothic Knights in the bottom half of the fifth for the run-ruled victory. Wheeler (4-5) earned the win in the circle for Ramapo scattering five NJCU hits. Messina, Verrino, Egan and Layton all collected two hits each in the game while Wheeler led with four RBI and Layton posted three RBI.
Game Two
The second game of the NJAC double header was a pitcher's duel between freshmen hurlers Wheeler and Emily Tunney. The Roadrunners and Gothic Knights kept each other off the score board until the seventh inning.
In the top of the seventh, Verrino and Egan came up big for Ramapo with back-to-back two-out RBI doubles to put Ramapo up, 2-0. Monaco singled with one out before Verrino's double to take a 1-0 lead. Egan then laced a double to left field that allowed Verrino to touch home plate to push the score, 2-0.
Wheeler surrendered a leadoff double but then got three straight outs to preserve the lead and earn her second win of the afternoon. Wheeler (5-5), who started both games, struck out three in each game while she did not surrender a walk in 12 innings pitched. Monaco led the team at the plate in game to with hitting 3-3 with one run scored.
Ramapo returns to action on Saturday, May 1st in the final regular season games of the year. The Roadrunners will travel to NJAC rival Kean University for a pair of games starting at 1pm.
