Montclair, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team swept a NJAC double header at rival Montclair State University today 8-5 and 3-0 in the nightcap. The Roadrunners improve to 18-10 overall, 7-5 in the NJAC while the Red Hawks drop to 23-11 overall and 9-7 in the conference.
Game One
Ally Spellman's three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the game as the Roadrunners won 8-5. Ramapo got on the board in the first inning when
Christina Brizek drove home
Jackie Howarth for a quick 1-0 lead. In the second inning
Sisi Machinski drove a double into left field allowing
Nicole Hernandez to push the lead 2-0.
MSU scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead in the third inning before Ramapo retook the lead in the fifth inning aided by two MSU errors as they scored three runs on four hits. Back-to-back bunt singles from Howarth and Spellman put runners on first and second with no outs before
Shannon Cox drove home Howarth with a single to center field. Spellman was able to score when the relay throw from the outfield sailed wide for a 4-3 lead. Brizek then laced a triple to center field plating Cox 5-3.
In the sixth,
Carli Egan walked and Howarth singled down the left field line before Spellman belted her first home run of the season over the left field fence extending the lead 8-3. MSU added two runs in the sixth inning 8-5 before the Roadrunners held the Red Hawks in the seventh for the win.
Erin Fitzsimmons (3-4) earned the win in relief for the Roadrunners. She struck out four, walked five and scattered three hits in the final 4.1 innings of work.
Katrina Buczkowski earned a no decision after getting the start on the mound. She struck out two, walked two and scattered four hits in 2.2 innings.
Game Two
Brizek (7-2) spun a four-hit shutout in game two as the Roadrunners won 3-0. She struck out four and walked none. The Roadrunners scored all the runs they would need in the top of the sixth inning.
Egan led off with an infield single before moving to second on a wild pitch. Howarth walked and Spellman laced a single into left field allowing Egan to score for the 1-0 lead. Cox then drove home Howarth with a single before
Krista Verrino plated Spellman with a sac fly to left field for the 3-0 lead.
Brizek and the Roadrunner defense held MSU in the sixth and seventh inning, including turning a double play to end the game in the seventh inning. Spellman finished 3-4 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI while Cox finished 2-4 with one RBI.
The Roadrunners return to action on Thursday, April 26th when they host Rutgers-Camden University in NJAC action at 3pm.
