Ewing, NJ: The College of New Jersey softball team swept a NJAC doubleheader from Ramapo College today 10-2 in six innings in game one and 2-0 in game two. The Lions improve to 19-5 overall, 7-1 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners drop to 13-9 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Game one
Alanna Namit struck out eight, walked three and scattered one hit in six innings of work for TCNJ. Namit earned the win on the mound as she improved to 9-0 overall. The Lions capitalized on six Roadrunner errors in the game. TCNJ led 5-0 heading into the top of the sixth inning before Ramapo got on the board with two runs of their own to cut the lead 5-2.
Christina Brizek laced a single into right-center field with the bases loaded allowing
Jackie Howarth and
Ally Spellman to score. The Lions would break open the game in the bottom half of the inning and take an eight-run lead as they capitalized on two Ramapo defensive errors for the 10-2 NJAC victory.
Brizek (5-3) struck out one, walked four and surrendered ten runs (three earned) while she scattered six hits in the game.
Game two
The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and starting pitcher Sam Platt fired a one-hit shutout as the Lions defeated Ramapo 2-0. Lauren Conroy drove home Megan Mayernik with a single to center field for the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Platt took a no-hitter into the fourth inning before
Shannon Cox laced a double into left field. TCNJ would get out of the jam with an inning ending double play to hold the lead at 1-0. With the bases loaded in the sixth, Helena Coppola was hit by a pitch to force home pinch runner Francesca Pugliese for the 2-0 score.
Erin Fitzsimmons (2-3) took the loss for the Roadrunners on the mound. She struck out four, walked three and scattered three hits in the complete game.
Platt (5-3) struck out three, walked two and only surrendered one hit for the Lions.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Rutgers-Camden University in a pair of NJAC conference games starting at 1pm.
