Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Mount Saint Mary College (NY) 3-2 in eight innings and 11-3 in six innings. The Roadrunners improve to 13-7 overall while the Knights drop to 9-10 overall.
Game one
The Knights took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Starting pitcher Cindy Connoly poked a single into center field allowing Amanda Almodovar to score for a 1-0 lead. Almondovar led off the game by being hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded and two outs, Morgan O'Neil hit a seeing eye single into left field plating Courtney Barbara.
Ramapo cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth scoring one run.
Christina Brizek hit a double to left field before she moved to third on a sac bunt from
Krista Verrino.
Carli Egan then laced a double down the left field line allowing Brizek to score to come within one run 2-1. The Roadrunner would tie the game in the seventh inning when
Harper Patsko led off with a walk before moving to second on a sac bunt from
Nicole Hernandez.
Jackie Howarth then poked a single to left field allowing Patsko to score to tie the game 2-2. Howarth moved up to third as the relay throw was misplayed as the Roadrunners saw the game-winning run 60 feet away with two outs. The Knight induced a line out to right field to end the threat as the game went into the eighth inning.
The Knights placed pinch runner Erin McCann on second base as she moved to third on an infield ground out before the Ramapo defense recorded two more outs to hold the score at 2-2.
Ally Spellman started on second base for the Roadrunners before
Shannon Cox beat out a bunt single which allowed Spellman to move to third base as the game-winning run. The Knights recorded back-to-back outs before Egan came up big and laced a single down the left field line allowing Spellman to score 3-2.
Brizek earned the win on the mound going the distance with one strike out, two walks and scattering eight hits. She also finished 1-4 at the plate with one run scored. Howarth and Eagan each finished 2-4 while Eagan knocked in two RBI.
Game 2
Ramapo jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third inning with only one hit. Three straight walks loaded the bases for the Roadrunners before an error plated the first run of the game 1-0. The bases were loaded with one out when Verrino put down a bunt single allowing Spellman to score 2-0 before
Carly Vadinsky drew a bases loaded walk for a 3-0 lead. Hernandez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home Brizek 4-0 before Verrino scored on a wild pitch extending the lead 5-0.
The Knights got two runs back in the top of the fourth. With two outs and the bases loaded Taylor Canto smacked a double to right field allowing two runs to score before Ramapo got out of the inning with a ground out back to starting pitcher
Katrina Buczkowski who threw to Howarth at first base to end the inning with a 5-2 lead.
Ramapo added four runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead 9-2. Hernandez led off with a double, Oliva Mahon singled to third base before they both moved up one base on a wild pitch. Egan plated one run with a single before Mahon scored on a wild pitch. Brizek and Verrino then recorded back-to-back RBI singles for the 9-2 lead.
The Knights tacked on one run in the top of the sixth when Canto drove home Barbara with a RBI fielder's choice with the bases loaded 9-3. The Roadrunners got out of the jam before they added two runs in the sixth. Hernandez once again led off with a double before a double from Eagan allowed her to score for a 10-3 lead. Mahon reached on an infield error and later scored on a wild pitch to end the game 11-3 with the eight-run lead after six inning.
Buczkowski (6-1) earned the win on the mound working 5.2 inning with one strikeout, two walks and scattering two hits. Eagan finished the game 2-2 with two runs scored and two RBI while Verrino finished 2-4 with one run scored and two RBI. Hernandez finished 2-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, April 11th when they travel to NJAC rival the College of New Jersey for a doubleheader at 1pm.
