Mahwah, NJ: The New Jersey City University women's soccer team held on for a 3-2 road win over Ramapo College today at the Athletic Center. The Gothic Knights improve to 5-9 overall, 2-5 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners now stand at 4-9 overall and 2-5 in the conference.
NJCU got on the board (31:00) in the first half when Mallensy Vargas tallied her team leading 13th goal of the year on a penalty kick following a Ramapo foul inside the box. The Gothic Knights took the lead into halftime before they added two quick goals in the second half for a 3-0 score. Ramapo led 6-3 in shots in the first half while the Roadrunners recorded the only corner kick of the half.
The Gothic Knights put up two goals in the second half. Mescavage took a free kick and sent a high bouncing ball into the box that went over the Roadrunner goalie's head as she could not get a hand on it as it went into the back of the net in the 47th minute (46:15). Just thirty seconds later Catarina Borralho connected on a pass from Katherin Merino to extend the Gothic Knight lead 3-0 (46:45).
Ramapo would come back in the final thirty minutes with two goals of their own.
Nani Vizcaino slipped a ball to
Amanda Gouldsbury in the 58th minute (57:02) hitting the back of the net as she collected her second goal of the season to put Ramapo on the board 3-1. Vizcaino scored her own goal, her third of the year, off a pass from
Jessica Raccioppi to come within one 3-2 (70:51). The Roadrunners would record three more shots, two on goal in the final 20 minutes of action but could not find the back of the net to tie the game. They had a great chance on a free kick in the 84th minute as
Liliann Vizcaino sent a ball into the box and Skylar Rybacki was able to get her head on it as NJCU goalie Dominique Jackson came out hard to make the save.
The Roadrunners held a 15-9 advantage in shots and 3-1 lead in corner kicks in the game. The Ramapo defense was able to hold their line and draw NJCU offside eight times.
Elizabeth Harvell collected five saves for Ramapo while Jackson posted six saves for NJCU.
Ramapo honored their senior class in a pre-game ceremony. Congratulations and best wishes to
Jessica Cusick,
Nani Vizcaino,
