Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team split a non-conference double header with Stevens Institute of Technology today. The Roadrunners won game one 4-1 while the Ducks came back to take game two 2-1. Stevens improves to 15-9 overall while Ramapo now stands at 14-8 on the season.
Stevens scored first in game one in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead before Ramapo came back to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. Madison Telles drove home Amanda DiLeo with a double to right centerfield. For the Roadrunners,
Melanie Walling led off the bottom half of the inning with a single and eventually moved to third on an infield throwing error before scoring on
Nicole Mahoney's sac fly to center field to tie the game 1-1.
In the third, Ramapo scored three runs on four hits to take a 4-1 lead.
Ally Spellman led off with a bunt single before moving to second on an illegal pitch.
Danielle Saporito then drove a double to deep center field plating Spellman with the eventual game-winning run. Saporito advanced to third on an illegal pitch before she scored on
Christina Brizek's single to center field. With one out Walling drove a single up the middle as Brizek crossed home plate with the fourth run of the game for the Roadrunners.
Katrina Buczkowski (6-4) earned the win working the first six innings with three strikeouts, no walks and surrendered eight hits.
Paige Merle earned her first save of the season facing four batters in the seventh inning with one strike out and one walk.
In game two, Ramapo got on the board with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Mikayla Melendez singled before moving to second on a sac bunt from Walling. Following a walk to
Harper Patsko,
Melissa Moreno drove home Melendez with a single to left-center field to take a 1-0 lead. Stevens came back with one run in the top of the fifth as Jessica Rees led off with a double Farryl Groder laced a single up the middle on the seventh pitch of her at-bat allowing Rees to come around and score 1-1. They would score the eventual game-winning run in the sixth inning when Lauren Shirley crossed home plate on a wild pitch for a 2-1 lead.
Ramapo did not go away quietly, putting the leadoff runner on base in their final two at-bats. Stevens was able to hold the lead to secure the 2-1 non-conference win.
Erin Fitzsimmons (0-2) was the hard luck pitcher for Ramapo as she struck out seven, walked two and scattered five hits over five innings of work. Brizek came in for relief in the sixth inning; she struck out two and surrendered two hits.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark University at 3pm.
