Kissimmee, FL: The Ramapo College softball team split a pair of games today with a one run loss against Washington College (MD) 2-1 before defeating Dubuque College 7-3. The Roadrunners now stand at 5-5 overall and return to action tomorrow against Utica at 11:15am and Cortland at 1:30pm in the final two games at the Rebel Spring Games.
The Roadrunners scored the first run of the game against Washington College (6-7) in the second inning without recording a hit.
Grace Brennan reached on a fielder's choice before she stole second base and advanced to third as the throw sailed into the outfield. She later scored on a wild pitch.
Washington tied the game in the top of the third inning when they scored an unearned run 1-1. The Shorewomen would take a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning. The Roadrunners recorded the first out of the inning on defense before back-to-back errors allowed the eventual game-winning run to cross home plate for Washington College.
Ramapo would put the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the seventh inning when
Harper Patsko led off with a single and advanced to second on a pass ball before she moved to third on a hard hit single from
Ally Spellman to right field. Following a pitching change for the Shorewomen, the defense got the first two outs of the inning before
Melissa Moreno was hit on the first pitch of her at-bat to load the bases for
Melanie Walling. Walling took the fifth pitch she saw and lifted it into deep center field but the final out of the game was made to end the Ramapo threat.
Ramapo starting pitcher
Katrina Buczkowski (1-3) took the tough loss as she struck out six, walked none and scattered four hits in the complete game. Patsko recorded two of the Roadrunners' four hits in the game.
In game two, Ramapo posted a 7-3 win over Dubuque (4-10). The Roadrunners scored two runs in the top of the first inning for a quick 2-0 lead.
Christina Brizek and Moreno recorded back-to-back singles before
Melanie Walling laced a double to center field plating Brizek with the first run of the game.
Grace Brennan then ripped a single up the middle allowing Moreno to score. In the second inning,
Ally Spellman hit an inside the park home run to lead off the inning before Saporito walked and stole second. With two outs, Saporito scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead.
In the third inning, Ramapo added three more runs extending their lead to 7-0. With the bases loaded, Alex Rigoli ripped a single to left field plating
Mikayla Melendez and
Shannon Cox. Melendez singled and Cox walked earlier in the inning before Brennan came home on an infield single from Saporito.
Neither team would score until the sixth inning when Dubuque scored three runs on four hits and one Ramapo error to come within four 7-3. With one out and three runs across for Dubuque,
Erin Fitzsimmons came in for relief of starting pitcher
Christina Brizek with runner's on first and second. Fitzsimmons surrendered a single up the middle, but the runner at second held up at third base before she got the final two outs via strikeout to end the threat in the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh for Dubuque, Fitzsimmons surrendered a lead off single before she recorded back-to-back strikeouts and a fly out to right field preserve the win for the Roadrunners.
Brizek (4-1) earned the win with two strikeouts, one walk in 5.1 innings. She surrendered nine hits and three runs (one earned). Fitzsimmons earned her first career save in the final 1.2 innings of work with four strikeouts and no walks. Ramapo collected nine hits in the game while Brennan led the team with a 2-3 performance.
