Kissimmee, FL: The Ramapo College softball team split on day two of the Rebel Spring Games. The Roadrunners (1-3) fell to Washington College (MD) 5-1 before defeated McDaniel College 7-6 in nine innings.
Ramapo struck first in the first game when
Melissa Moreno drove home
Danielle Saporito with a hard hit single into right field for a 1-0 lead.
Washington scored four runs on five hits in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Shorewomen sent 10 players to the plate in the inning. Elaina DiPrimio drove home the game-tying run with a single with the bases loaded before Maddie Bennett drew a bases loaded walk to put Washington up 2-1. Hannah Spohn drove home Paige Briganti with a single before Taylor Harcum drew the inning's second bases loaded walk. The Shorewomen scored one more run in the sixth to extend their lead 5-1.
Taylor Harcum (2-3) struck out three, walked three and scattered four hits in the win for Washington College.
Erin Fitzsimmons (0-1) worked the first 2.1 innings for the Roadrunners, she struck out three, walked three and scattered five hits.
Paige Merle finished the final 3.2 innings for Ramapo, striking out two, walking four and surrendered three hits.
Ramapo won 7-6 in nine innings in game two with a walk-off single from
Olivia Mahon. The Roadrunners struck first with two runs in the first inning aided by one error. Saporito led off the game with a single to right field before moving up one base when
Mikayla Melendez was hit by a pitch.
Melanie Walling then ripped a single to right field plating Saporito with the games first run.
Nicole Mahoney put down a perfect bunt single as Melendez came around to score to take a 2-0 lead.
McDaniel scored one run in the second before Mahoney led off the third inning with a blast over the left field fence for a 3-1 lead. In the fourth inning, Melendez drove home Saporito to take a 4-1 lead before McDaniel tied the game with one run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, McDaniel took a 6-4 lead when Olivia Kipe plated two runs with a double to right-centerfield.
Ramapo came back to score two runs and tie the game in the seventh inning. With one out
Grace Brennan and Alex Rigoli walked before Mahon singled to left field to load the bases.
Ally Spellman was hit by a pitch allowing Brennan to score before McDaniel was able to get the second out of the inning with a play at the plate. The Roadrunners would tie the game when
Harper Patsko drew a bases loaded walk plating Saporito with the game-tying run 6-6.
The game would move into the eighth inning and use the international tiebreaker rule by placing the last batted out on second base. Both teams made defensive plays in the eight to push the game into the ninth inning. In the top of the ninth, Ramapo got the lead runner at third base when Melendez fielded a hard hit ground ball and flipped to Patsko who was covering the third base bag and tag the runner coming from second base for the first out of the inning. Following a stolen base by McDaniel, Ramapo's
Christina Brizek got out of the jam with a ground out and strike out to end the threat. In the bottom half of the ninth, Brennan was placed on second base before Rigoli put down a perfect bunt single to put runner's on first and third with no outs. Mahon then popped a single between the second basemen and right fielder as Brennan scored with the game winning run and the walk off 7-6 win for Ramapo.
Brizek (1-1) earned the win in relief for the Roadrunners working the final 2.2 innings and did not allow a hit with one strikeout.
Katrina Buczkowski earned a no-decision as she worked 6.1 innings with four strikeouts, one walk.
Mahoney and Mahon each collected two hits apiece in the game while Brennan and Saporito each scored two runs.
The Roadrunners return to action on March 15th when they take on Springfield College at 9am and Dickinson College at 11:15am.
