SOFTBALL SWEEPS BROOKLYN

Brooklyn, NY:  The Ramapo College softball team swept a non-conference double header today at Brooklyn College. The Roadrunners (11-5) came back to win game one, 12-7 while they shutout the Bulldogs (5-7) in game two, 13-0, in five innings.
 
Ramapo took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Alexandria Rigoli led off with a single before Mikayla Melendez hit an inside the park home run to put two runs on the board. Melanie Walling and Danielle Saporito then recorded back-to-back RBI hits to plate the final two runs of the inning.
 
Brooklyn scored one run in the bottom of the third before they took a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Ramapo answered back with eight runs in the top of the sixth inning. Melendez drove home Nicole Mahoney with a single before LaPenta drove in two RBI with the bases loaded and Melissa Moreno knocked in two RBI of her own with a single through the left side of the infield. Pinch runner Emily Helmer scored on a fielder's choice before Grace Brennan smacked a two-run homerun for the final two runs of the inning.
 
Paige Merle (1-0) earned her first of two wins on the day for the Roadrunners. She came in relief in the fifth inning to get the final out. She struck out six over the final 2.1 innings while she only surrendered one hit. Danielle Isenberg started the game earning the no-decision. She scattered ten hits over 4.2 innings of work while giving up seven runs, six earned. She also struck out two and walked two.
 
Ramapo recorded 15 hits in the game including four extra base hits. Moreno finished 4-5 with one run scored and two RBI while Melendez was 3-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Jaclyn Lima finished the game 2-4 with one run scored.
 
In game two, Ramapo scored in every inning but the top of the third to take the game 13-0. The Roadrunners collected 18 hits in the game while Merle (2-0) earned her second win, firing a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and one walk.
 
LaPenta helped set the tone for Ramapo in the top of the first inning with an inside the park home run before Saporito beat out a bunt single and stole second before she scored on Moreno's infield groundout for a 2-0 lead. In the second inning, LaPenta drove home Melendez and Lima with a double before Moreno drove home LaPenta with a single to left field for a 5-0 lead. The Roadrunners added three runs in the fourth inning extending their lead to 8-0 before they added five runs in the fifth inning. In the fifth, Helmer collected her first collegiate hit of her career with a single up the middle before LaPenta ripped a triple allowing Helmer to come home. Saporito doubled home LaPenta while Saporito later scored on a Brooklyn error. Walling then ripped a double to plate Moreno before Mahoney drove home Walling with a double to center field for a 13-0 lead. Ramapo recorded six hits in the inning, including three doubles and one triple.
 
Three Roadrunners collected three hits apiece in game two, Saporito, Melendez and LaPenta who was a single away from hitting for the cycle. She also collected four RBI and three runs scored.
Ramapo returns to action tomorrow afternoon at 3:00pm when they host New Jersey City University in a NJAC double header.
