Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team wrapped up the 2013 season with a 30-16-1 overall record and 9-8-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) record. The Roadrunners advanced to the Championship game of the NJAC Tournament for the second year in a row while also earning their third straight At-large bid to the NCAA Baseball Tournament.
The Roadrunners started the season in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where they swept Centenary College, 6-3 and 7-1 in two seven-inning games at the Northeast Challenge. Their final two games were canceled due to weather.
On March 16th, Ramapo opened up at the Russ Matt Tournament in Winter Haven, Florida. The Roadrunners would go 9-1 on their annual Spring Trip south. They defeated Bowdoin in a double header, 2-1 (9) and 7-2 (7). They shutout McDaniel, 8-0 before defeating Anderson (IN), 3-1, Western New England University, 7-6 (10), Springfield, 9-7, Amherst, 4-0 and Framingham State, 1-0.
The Roadrunners continued their win streak when they got home. They picked up wins over non-conference rival Baruch, 6-5 before sweeping NJAC rival Rowan University on the road, 4-2 and 6-5. They defeated Stevens, 5-4 before falling to NJAC rival William Paterson University in a home-and-home series, 2-7 and 5-6. The Roadrunners swept NJAC foe Richard Stockton in a pair of one-run extra inning games, 6-5 (10) and 5-4 (11). The University of Scranton defeated the Roadrunners, 2-8 before Ramapo shutout St. Joseph's (LI), 2-0. Ramapo's home game with conference rival Montclair State University would end in a tie, 4-4, the game was called due to darkness. Ramapo split an away NJAC doubleheader with the College of New Jersey, 4-6, 7-2 before defeating Montclair State, 10-8 in ten innings. In their final 13 games of the season the Roadrunners picked up wins over Drew, 9-3, Manhattanville, 16-5, conference rival Rutgers-Newark, 6-3, Purchase, 13-6, NJAC foe NJCU, 6-2 and NJAC foe Rutgers-Camden, 12-0.
Ramapo earned the #5 seed in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament. Ramapo opened up against #2 William Paterson on the road on April 30th, falling 1-6. Ramapo then hosted #6 TCNJ and defeated the Lions, 10-6 to move onto the weekend portion of the Tournament at #1 Kean University and Jim Hynes '62 Stadium. The Roadrunners went up against WPU, knocking off the #2 seed, 6-2 before facing #1 Kean. Ramapo defeated Kean in the bottom of the 9th, 6-5, to move onto the Championship game against #3 Rowan University. The Roadrunners fell to the Profs, 3-5.
Ramapo would earn their third straight NCAA at-large bid to the Baseball Tournament. The Roadrunners would be selected as the #6 seed in the Mid-Atlantic Regional hosted by Misericordia University at PNC Field in Moosic, PA. Ramapo opened up against host #3 Misericordia on May 15th; the Roadrunners posted a 4-0 shutout win. Ramapo then fell to #2 Keystone, 2-4, falling to the loser's bracket. Ramapo came back to defeat #5 Johns Hopkins University, 3-1 before ending the season against Misericordia, 1-2, in the double-elimination tournament.
Seniors
Christian Spurr and
Dave Jacob have been named to the 2013 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second Team. The senior duo was also named to the 2013 D3baseball.com All Mid-Atlantic All-Region First Team. Jacob has also been tabbed the 2013 New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Division II/III Player of the Year for the second straight season. Spurr and
Travis Zilg have also been named to the NJCBA First and Second Team All-State respectively, while
Chris Werr and
Joe Venturino have earned NJCBA Third Team All-State honors. Venturino also earned NJCBA All-Rookie Team. Spurr was also named NJAC First Team All-Conference while Jacob and Venturino were each named NJAC Second Team All-Conference.
Spurr led the team this season at the plate. Starting 43 games at third base, he boasted a batting average of .380 while finishing tied with Jacob in hits with 68. He scored a team leading 36 runs and led the team in RBI with 32. He added 18 doubles and one home run with 14 walks for a .497 on base percentage. He finishes his career with the most hits in school history, 224. He achieved this at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional in the sixth inning against Misercorida on May 17th.
Jacob started all 47 games this season for the Roadrunners. He compiled a .364 batting average. He belted out 68 hits, three doubles, four triples and two home runs. He added 27 RBI while scoring 34 runs of his own. He earned 15 walks while he reached base 18 times on a hit by pitch for a .455 on base percentage. He led the team with 29 stolen bases in 35 attempts. He ends his Ramapo career tied as the leader in career-stolen bases with 55. He collected 106 putouts in the outfield with eight assists, the most by any Ramapo outfielder this season.
Venturino wrapped up his rookie season playing in 45 games while starting 40. He collected 47 hits on 163 at bats for a .288 batting average. He collected five doubles and 21 runs scored while knocking in 22 RBI. He tallied 11 stolen bases (11-16).
Zilg finished the season with a 2.11 ERA and a 6-2 win/loss record. He made 12 appearances and nine starts in 72.2 innings pitched. He posted four complete games, one shutout and one save. He ended his career as the all-time leader in innings pitched, (275.2), second in wins (21), second in complete games (13), first in appearances (57) and third in strikeouts (192).
