Montclair, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team took an early lead and never looked back as they defeated #15/18 Montclair State University, 10-2. The Roadrunners move to 26-10 overall and 11-5 in the NJAC while the Red Hawks stand at 28-8 overall and 12-4 in the league.
Ramapo got on the board in the top of the second inning with one run before they added three in the third for a 4-0 lead. In the first,
Zach Barbash drove in
Julian Schultz with an RBI single.
Julian Caruso scored the first run in the third inning on a MSU throwing error before
Eric Knapp drew a bases loaded walk to force home
Jack Tallent for a 3-0 lead.
Braden Schappert lifted a sac fly to second base which allowed
Zach Novakowski to score, 4-0. In the sixth, Novakowski belted his fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot over the right field wall to extend the Roadrunner lead, 7-0. Schultz drove in
Nick Pellegrino with an RBI single of his own as Ramapo led, 8-0. In the eighth, Pellegrino knocked in Tallent with an RBI single before Novakowski scored on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Knapp, 10-0. The Red Hawks tacked on two runs in the eighth with RBI singles from Matt Kaliske and Brody Diers.
John Hacker (6-1) struck out three, walked three and scattered five hits over seven complete innings of work. Ramapo turned three double plays in the game to keep the Red Hawks off the board through seven innings.
Cody Quagliato surrendered three runs (two unearned) with one strikeout in the eighth while
Greg Guzman worked a scoreless ninth including a strikeout to end the game. Caruso finished with three of Ramapo's 10 hits in the game with two runs scored. Pellegrino, Schultz and Barbash all posted two hits and one run scored.
The Roadrunners will return to action on Monday when they host Stockton University in the final NJAC regular season game of the season. The first pitch of game one is set for 11:30am.Â
