Box Score Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College men's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-16, 25-22) decision today in their 2013 season opener to the Violets of NYU. With the loss the Roadrunners open the year at 0-1. NYU gets their first win to improve to 1-1 overall.
The Roadrunners took game one from NYU, 26-24, behind five kills from Colabella. Colabella hit .455 while the team combined hitting .241 with 13 kills on 29 attempts and six errors. Hrehovcik collected four kills in the win while Balint dished out ten assists. NYU's Drew Steiner led the team with five kills. The Roadrunners held a 24-21 lead down the final stretch but the Violets strung together three points to tie the game at 24. Hrehovcik took two straight dishes from Balint earning the go ahead and game winning points to take the first game.
NYU fought back and took game two to tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 win. George Koch, Steiner, and Colin LaPorte together sparked the offense putting down four kills each. Connor Mortland assisted on 13 points and led the defense with three digs. The team combined hitting .258 in the win. Colabella again led Ramapo, this time with five kills.
Chris Sidnam collected four of his own. The two teams traded points until a three point surge at 12-12 from the Violets gave NYU a 15-12 advantage off a Ramapo attack error. The Roadrunners slowly chipped away at NYU's lead to tie the game again, this time at 20-20, with a service ace from
Mike Kane. But it was the Violets down the stretch and Mortland serving four straight points to jump ahead, 24-20. Ramapo made a final push but fell short, 23-25.
NYU prevailed in game three to go ahead 2-1, earning a 25-16 victory. Nick Benson put away five points and Mortland assisted on nine points in the game. The team combined hitting 10-22 with three errors (.318). Sidnam led the Roadrunners with three kills Balint dished out six assists. With Ramapo ahead 11-10, Nick Benson served three straight aces for the Violets to go ahead, 13-11, forcing a Ramapo timeout. The Roadrunners would only score five points in the remainder of the game, falling to NYU, 16-25.
The fourth game went to NYU, 25-22 behind six kills from LaPorte. The team hit .241 with 13 kills on 29 attempts and six errors. Mortland dished out 13 assists in the win. Ramapo was led by seven kills from Hrehovcik as the team went 14-32 with six errors (.250). Again the two teams traded points until an
18-18 tie on a kill from LaPorte. NYU jumped ahead 21-18 after an ace from Mortland, and they held onto the game for the match victory.
On the day, Steiner led NYU's attack with 12 kills and Benson and LaPorte each added 11, as the team hit a combined 52-110 with 25 errors (.245). Mortland collected 47 assists and Mortland and Dylan Ramey each recorded 12 digs in the game. Hrehovcik led Ramapo with 12 kills and Sidnam and Colabella each recorded 11. Balint finished the day with a team high 37 assists as the team hit a combined 47-119 with 25 errors (.185).
Ramapo travel to Cairn University when they return to action on January 29th at 7pm.
