Garret Thiel nailed a three pointer with one second left in regulation to tie the game at 60 before the Ramapo men's basketball team pulled out a 71-68 NJAC road victory over rival Richard Stockton College. The Roadrunners now stand at 13-2, 8-1 in the conference while the Ospreys fall to 11-3 overall, 7-3 in the NJAC.
Thiel grabbed a rebound off a missed foul shot by the Ospreys with six seconds on the clock as he drove the length of the floor and nailed the game tying three pointer in front of the Roadrunner bench to tie the game at 60 all with one second left in game.
In the overtime period the game was tied for the eighth time, 64-64 (3:16) before the Ospreys went up one, 65-64 on a made foul shot by Sal Pistone (2:08). Ramapo senior
Will Sanborn would make an and-one play with a layup and made foul shot with 57 seconds remaining in the game to put Ramapo in the lead for good 67-65. With 26 tics left on the clock Sanborn went to the foul line and made both shots, 69-65, before Stockton's Jesse Hunt came down and sank a three pointer to come within one, 69-68 with eight seconds left in the game. Elgin Brown was fouled, sending him to the foul line with one second left in the game to seal the win for the Roadrunners, 71-68.
Ramapo would come back from a 15 point deficit in the first half. Stockton led, 27-12 with 5:03 remaining in the half before Ramapo went on a 9-1 run, shrinking the Stockton lead to seven, 21-28 capped off by a layup by
John Martens. Stockton would go on a mini 5-0 run to close the first half out, up 33-21.
In the second half, The Roadrunners would go on a 9-0 run with 14:22 on the clock, started by a Sanborn three and capped off by a layup by Brown to take a two point lead, 44-42. With the game tied for the fifth time, 55-55 with 4:15 on the clock in the half, Ramapo and Stockton would trade baskets before the Ospreys went up 60-57 on two foul shots by Darnell McCargo with 1:05 left on the clock setting up the dramatic three point shot by Thiel to send the game into overtime.
Sanborn tallied 23 points in the game while Brown posted a double-double, 21 points and 14 rebounds. Martens added ten points while Thiel posted seven points, four assists and two blocks. Ramapo shot 25-53 (47%) from the floor in the game while they shot 15-18 (83%) from the foul line in the game. The Roadrunners also forced 18 turnovers and out rebounded the Ospreys, 45-30 in the game.
Ramapo returns to action on Monday when they host non-conference rival York College (NY) at 7:00pm at the Bradley Center.
