Newark, NJ: Rutgers-Newark hit .632 (39-3-57) as a team to overpower Division III Ramapo College, 25-13, 25-9, 25-14, in The Golden Dome.
Senior setter Jeff Zornig (Coto de Caza, CA/Tesoro HS) notched 26 assists, including a dozen in the opening game when the Scarlet Raiders (8-0) hit an incredible .800 (13—1-15) to set the tone for the evening. Rutgers-Newark committed just one hitting error in each set, hitting .625 (11-1-16) in the second frame and .538 (15-1-26) in the third.
Junior right side Kenneth de Groh (Palos Heights, IL/Alan B. Shepard) posted a match-high 14.0 points with 10 kills, three aces and a solo block. He hit .600 (10-1-15) while junior right side Austin Pappas (Trabuco Canyon, CA/Tesoro) had seven kills and no errors on nine swings, two aces and a pair of assisted blocks for 10.0 points.
Junior outside hitter Marcin Midura (Linden, NJ/St. Joseph's) and sophomore middle hitter Brett Pickens (Anaheim, CA/Lutheran of Orange County) each had six kills without an attack error. Midura had two of the Raiders' eight aces while junior libero Zack Chambers (Oneida, NY/Oneida) came up with a match-high seven digs.
The Roadrunners (4-6) got three kills on three swings by freshman middle blocker
Chris Sidnam (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) who also added an assisted block. Freshman outside hitter
Nick Hrehovcik (Little Falls, NJ/Passaic Valley) tallied three kills while junior outside hitter
Paul Konopacki (Monroe Township, NJ/St. Joseph's) came up with two kills and Ramapo's only ace. Freshman setter
Andrew Balint (East Brunswick, NJ/ East Brunswick) dished out 14 assists in the match.
Rutgers-Newark hits the road to face No. 9 Penn State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saint Francis on Saturday at 2 in EIVA Tait action. Ramapo visits Kean University Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
