Women's Volleyball Stevens SID

RAMAPO TAKES STEVENS, 3-2

Hoboken, NJ: Despite 13 kills and 15 digs from senior Maggie Majcher, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team fell to visiting Ramapo College, 3-2 (19-25, 25-15, 16-25, 26-24, 15-12), in its home opener at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J.

With the loss, the Ducks move to 5-2 on the year, while the Roadrunners improved to 2-0.

Sophomore Maggie Kowalska notched 10 kills and three blocks, while freshman Chrissy Dickinson had 10 kills. Senior setter Sara Budar dished out 22 assists on the evening, with freshman counterpart Samantha Gates adding 17 helpers. Senior libero Julia Reilly collected 21 digs in defense.

Junior outside hitter Michelle Ferrari (Marlton, N.J.) led Ramapo with nine kills and 13 digs, while junior Maura Burke (Wykoff, N.J.) and senior Meagan Taege (Manahawkin, N.J.) had nine and eight kills, respectively. Junior libero Elizabeth Steck (Marlton, N.J.) finished with 17 digs, while junior setter Tiffany Fischer (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) had a match-best 31 assists.

Ramapo returns to action when they travel to Lehman College on Thursday, September 9th at 8:00 PM.

Set 1: Stevens 25, Ramapo 19
Down 3-1 in the early going, the Ducks tallied four of the set's next six points, knotting the match at five. Ramapo responded with a 5-0 run of its own however, prompting a Stevens timeout. Majcher ended the Ducks' dryspell with a kill to make it 10-6, kick-starting a 6-1 Stevens rally.

With the set tied at 12, Majcher tipped it over the Roadrunner front line to help the Ducks regain the advantage. Down 19-16, Ramapo netted two straight points to pull within one, but a Roadrunner error coupled with a pair of Sarah Byrne and Kowalska kills, led to a 6-1 Stevens run that gave the Ducks a 25-19 first set victory.

Set 2: Ramapo 25, Stevens 15
Ramapo again got off to a fast start in the second set, tallying the frame's first five points. Still up five at 6-1, the Roadrunners put away consecutive points, stretching the lead to seven, while forcing a Stevens timeout.

Following the break, Byrne and Kowalska put away a pair of kills, trimming the lead back down to five. Ramapo responded by mounting a 5-1 run of their own before junior Kate Janes ended the Ducks' drought with her first kill of the evening.

Up 18-13, Ramapo put away back-to-back scores to increase the margin to seven. Still ahead by seven at 23-15, the Roadrunners sealed the win, tallying the set's final two points to knot the match at a set apiece.

Set 3: Stevens 25, Ramapo 16
With the pivotal third set tied at three, Stevens converted on four-straight points, capped off by an Amethyst Holder spike, forcing a Ramapo timeout. With the set at 8-4, the Ducks continued to apply pressure, tallying three-consecutive points to up the lead to seven.

Up 14-8, the Ducks took advantage of a pair of Ramapo errors to push the margin to nine, forcing another Roadrunner timeout. Ramapo pulled within five at 19-14, but a Roadrunner error followed by a Majcher kill once again upped the margin to seven.

A Janes kill coupled with a Ramapo error made it 24-16 before a Majcher kill gave Stevens a 25-16 third-set victory and a 2-1 match advantage.

Set 4: Ramapo 26, Stevens 24
Hoping to stay alive, Ramapo went up 3-1 in the early going, but back-to-back Ducks' points, capped off by a Kowalska spike, tied the game at three. Ramapo would outscore the Ducks, 8-5 over the next few minutes of action before another Kowalska kill made it 11-9. The Roadrunners responded by tallying three of the set's next four points to force a Stevens stoppage.

The Ducks scored back-to-back points out of the break, capped off by a Majcher ace, but Ramapo again rallied, taking the next three points to up their lead to five. Trailing 18-13, Stevens rattled off four-straight points to slice the deficit to one, while forcing the Roadrunners to call timeout.

A Majcher kill coming out of the break, briefly knotted the set at 18, but a Ducks error on the ensuing play once again put Ramapo on top. Down 20-19, Gates set up Majcher for a set-tying spike. With the set knotted at 21, Dickinson hammered home a go-ahead kill, but back-to-back Stevens errors once again gave the Roadrunners the edge.

Another Majcher kill tied the set at 23, but Ferrari notched a spike of her own to put Ramapo up 24-23. Budar would knot the set at 24, but the Roadrunners closed out the frame, tallying the final two points to send the match into a fifth and final stanza.

Set 5: Ramapo 15, Stevens 12
Ramapo raced out to an early 4-0 lead before a Roadrunner error put Stevens on the board. A Holder kill and Ramapo error following a long rally made it 5-3, before Kowalska and Dickinson combined for a block to pull Stevens within one.

Back-to-back kills from Kowalska and Holder gave Stevens its first lead of the set, but a Duck error once again tied the frame at six, before Ramapo tallied six of the set's next eight points to take an 12-8 lead.

A pair of Roadrunner errors following a Ducks' timeout pulled Stevens within two, but Ramapo battled back, outscoring the Ducks 3-2 down the stretch to pull out 15-12 victory.
