KONOPACKI LEADS RAMAPO TO SHUT OUT WIN OVER NJCU

Mahwah, NJ:  Sophomore Paul Konopacki (Monroe Twp., NJ)) led the Roadrunners to a 3-0 (30-28, 30-17, 30-25) NECVA Metro men's volleyball win tonight over the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University at the Bradley Center.  With the three game sweep the Roadrunners improve to 3-3 overall and earn their first conference win standing at 1-0.  NJCU falls to 2-3 overall, 0-2 in the conference.

In the first game of the best-out-of-five match-up, rookie Steve Vahalla (Bloomfield, NJ) and junior Jeff Elsasser (Barnegat, NJ) recorded five kills each while the team combined for 17 overall, leading the team to a tight two point win.  Ramapo hit .235 while NJCU went 10-26 with five errors hitting .192 in the loss.  Austin Bryant (Virginia Beach, VA) led the Gothic Knights with five kills in the game.  Rookie Brett Greiner (East Northport, NY) led the offensive attack in game two, hitting .500 with four kills on six attempts and only one error.  Ramapo started the game up, 14-4, before pushing to a 30-17 win.  The team hit .500 with 11 kills and only two errors on 18 attempts.  Bryant led NJCU again with five more kills hitting .222, his team hit -.154.  Konopacki stepped up his game in the third set recording a team high five kills helping his team to a 30-25 win.  Defensive specialist Kurt Backlund (Old Bridge, NJ) tallied five digs in the game and senior setter Matt Scott (Edison, NJ) dished out a high for the night, 17 assists.  Ramapo hit .171 in the final game while NJCU hit .069.  Jose Matta (San Juan, PR) led NJCU in the final game with four kills, no errors on seven attempts (.571).

On the night, Konopacki and Vahalla recorded eight kills each.  Konopacki hit a team high .538 with only one error on 13 attempts.  He recorded three blocks in the win.  Backlund led the defense with ten digs and Scott finished the night dishing out 40 assists.  Junior Elvis Cabrera (Clifton, NJ) added seven kills to the mix while Elsasser and Greiner added six each.  Matt Whitford (Lyndhurst, NJ) finished the night with five of his own.  The Roadrunners combined for 45 kills on 93 attempts with 21 errors hitting .258.

For NJCU, Bryant wrapped up the night with a team leading 12 kills and Matta finished with four of his own.  Chris Edra (Edison, NJ) recorded seven digs and Jorge Rodriguez (Havana, Cuba) led the way with 16 assists.  NJCU hit .037 with 25 total kills on 81 attempts and 22 errors.

The Roadrunners travel to Mt. St. Vincent returning to action tomorrow night at 7:00 PM.
