Steve Vahalla (Bloomfield, NJ) led the Roadrunners to a 3-0 sweep over the Raptors of Bard College, 30-14, 30-19, 30-24, tonight at the Bradley Center. Ramapo improves to 9-3 overall, and 4-0 in the NECVA Metro Conference while Bard falls to 6-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
The Roadrunners combined for 16 kills on 31 attempts with five errors hitting .355 in game one behind five kills each from Vahalla and junior
Jeff Elsasser (Barnegat, NJ). Senior setter
Matt Scott (Edison, NJ) dished out 11 assists and Elsasser and rookie
Kevin Froehlich (Ringwood, NJ) each contributed two digs to the team's defense. Nick Chan (Victor, NY) led the Raptors with two kills who hit a combined 3-24 with ten errors (-.292). Elijah Strauss (Queens, NY) led the defense with three digs. The Roadrunners came out with the game one win, 30-14.
In the second set of the best-out-of-five match-up, the Roadrunners took a 2-0 game lead downing the Raptors, 30-19. Ramapo's
Paul Konopacki (Monroe Twp., NJ) led the offensive attack with five kills on six attempts and no errors hitting .833 while junior
Elvis Cabrera (Clifton, NJ) went 4-6 with no errors hitting .667. The team hit a combined .440 with 15 total kills. Scott added 13 assists and Konopacki and Froehlich contributed two blocks each. Eliah Gardner (Chatham, NY) led Bard with four kills and Henry Schenker (Verona, NJ) led the way with eight assists. The team combined for 13 kills hitting .292.
In what turned out to be the final set of the match, the Roadrunners defeated the Raptors, 30-24. Sophomore
Colin McNeill (Little Falls, NJ) and rookie
Brett Greiner (Northport, NY) each contributed five kills in the final set while Scott dished out 15 assists. Greiner and Backlund chipped in two digs while the team hit .462 with 17 kills on 26 attempts. Schenker and Chan led Bard with four kills each and Chan dished out five assists and recorded three digs.
Vahalla finished the night with nine kills and Konopacki contributed eight while Froehlich added six of his own. Scott dished out 39 assists and
Kurt Backlund (Old Bridge, NJ) led the defense with five digs. The team combined for 48 kills hitting .415 while Bard finished the night hitting .041 with 26 kills on 73 attempts with 23 errors. Chan finished wiht a team high nine kills and Schenker dished out 14 assists. Chan led the defense with six digs.
The Roadrunners return to action this weekend when they travel to the Endicott Tournament in Beverly, Mass. to take on SUNYIT and MIT on Saturday at 3pm and 5pm respectively. The tournament continues into Sunday, seedings determined after Saturday's results.
