LaQuan Peterkin led the Ramapo men's basketball team to a 76-54 victory over the Maccabees of Yeshiva University tonight in the opening round of the 2010-2011 Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament. With the victory Ramapo improves to 2-0 overall. Yeshiva falls to 0-2.
Peterkin finished the night with a team high 19 points while
Garret Thiel recorded a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds.
Ahmad Hassan contributed 12 points and
Anthony LoRusso dished out five assists. The team combined hitting 30-69 (44%) while Yeshiva shot 20-42 (47%) from the field. Dovie Hoffman and Mazyar Kashan each contributed ten points on the night.
The Roadrunners opened to a 13-0 lead behind two three-point baskets from Hassan and an and-one play from Thiel, before the Maccabees finally got on the board at 14:24 with a layup from Gil Bash. Yeshiva put together a 10-5 run to come within six, but Ramapo responded with a 6-0 run of their own sparked by Peterkin and capped off by
Stephon Treadwell, to take a 24-12 lead. The Roadrunners posted their biggest lead of the half with 3:46 on the clock when Peterkin hit a jump shot and followed it up with a made free throw to go up, 32-18. The closest the Maccabees would come is eight with 1:37 on the clock when Chen Biron sunk a two-point basket, but
Elgin Brown put away a lay-up with under a minute to play to head into the intermission with a 36-26 lead over Yeshiva. Peterkin finished the half with a team leading 11 points while the team sunk 15-38 shooting 36%. Dovie Hoffman led the Maccabees with eight points shooting 3-8. His team went 11-22 shooting 50% in the first 20 minutes of play.
The Roadrunners held the Maccabees to only ten points in the first nine minutes of the second half while they sank 24 of their own. Thiel put away two points earning his team a 60-36 lead with 10:55 on the clock. The remainder of the half went much of the same with Ramapo earning their biggest lead at 8:55 and 7:09 when
Travis Conyers hit the back end of a two-shot foul and
Anthony Hines hit a jumper respectively. Ramapo combined for 15 field goals in the half behind eight points each from Peterkin and Conyers. Yeshiva was led by Kashan with eight second half points.
In the first match-up of the night, the Privateers of SUNY Maritime came out with a 31-24 halftime lead behind nine points from Mike McSloy and eight points from Andrew Geisel. The lead changed four times at the start of the half until 7:55 when McSloy hit a two-point basket to put Maritime up, 18-17. The Privateers spent the next six minutes working their way to a nine point advantage which was capped off by a jumper from Hugh Byrd. McSloy laid a basket in off a steal by Quamel Lyerly just before the buzzer to put his team up seven heading into the locker room. Maritime combined hitting 12-29 (41%) while Salve Regina sunk 10-33 (30%). Ryan Birrell and Dan Royce each contributed seven points in the half for the Seahawks.
Salve Regina opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 34-33 advantage that was topped off by a three-point basket from Joshua Fuhrmeister. SUNY Maritime fought back and tied the game, 49-49 when Giovanni Hurley sunk a jump shot at 10:04 but the Seahawks were too much for the Privateers fighting back for a 72-63 victory. Hinkson recorded 23 points in the half while the team sunk 18-44 (41%). Lyerly led the Privateers with 12 second half points. His team went 12-30 hitting 40%.
Windell Hinkson finished the night with a team leading 26 points shooting 9-25 including four three-point goals while Dan Royce and Birell added 17 and 12 points respectively. Birrell added six assists and three steals. The team shot 36% hitting 28-77. Maritime was led by Lyerly with 19 points and McSloy and Hurley each added 15 points on the night. The team shot 41% with 24 field goals on 59 attempts. Giovanni pulled down a team high 15 rebounds.
The Seahawks will face off with Ramapo at 3pm tomorrow in the championship match-up while the Provateers take on Yeshiva in a consolation match-up at 1pm.
