Wayne, NJ: Goals by junior Ali Ruddy (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) and sophomore Megan Droelle (Hampton, N.J./North Hunterdon) handed William Paterson (3-3-2, 1-0-1 NJAC) its first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) women's soccer victory of the year, a 2-1 decision against visiting Ramapo (5-3, 1-1 NJAC) Sept. 23.
Ruddy got the Pioneers on the scoreboard when she drilled a free kick low and past the Roadrunner defense, her second goal of the year for a 1-0 edge in the 23rd minute. Droelle then scored her first goal as a Pioneer 15 minutes later, drilling a Michelle Marabondo (Kenvil, N.J./Roxbury) cross into the lower-left portion of the goal.
The score remained 2-0 until the 53rd minute, when WP goalkeeper Meaghan Baker (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) could not collect a
Melanie Pupo (Newton, N.J./Morris Catholic) corner kick and
Kaitlin Griffith (Cedar Knolls, N.J./Whippany Park) was able to pounce on the loose ball and bury it, cutting the William Paterson lead in half at 2-1. Ramapo was able to apply some pressure for a time after the goal, but could not score the equalizer.
Baker made two saves for the Pioneers, and
Jessica DaRold (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) had five stops for the Roadrunners. William Paterson out-shot Ramapo, 11-4.
William Paterson will return to action Saturday, Sept. 26, at Rowan at 1:00 p.m. Ramapo will host Richard Stockton Sept. 26, also at 1:00 p.m.
