CANTY’S 17 POINTS PROPEL WPU PAST RAMAPO, 81-59

Mahwah, NJ: Sophomore Shaun Canty (Englewood, NJ) led the Pioneers with 17 points helping his team to a 22 point, 81-59 victory over the Roadrunners in a men's basketball NJAC match-up at the Bradley Center.  Ramapo falls to 13-11 overall and 6-7 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference while the Pioneers improve to 19-5 overall, 8-4 in the conference. 

The Roadrunners jumped out to a five point, 28-23 lead at the half behind 16 points from senior Tim Wesley (Jersey City, NJ). Ramapo led for most of the 20 minutes, their biggest lead coming at 12:39 when a two-point goal from Wesley put the Roadrunners up, 15-5. A mini 4-0 run sparked by Shaun Canty (Englewood, NJ) at 10:20, brought the Pioneers within four, 19-15, but a three-pointer from Wesley put Ramapo up by seven with just over seven minutes to play. Manny Perrotte (Piscataway, NJ) answered with a three-pointer of his own to cut Ramapo's lead to four, and a Chris Brown (Newark, NJ) tip-in at 4:23 put the Pioneers within two, 22-20. The Roadrunners out scored the Pioneers by a slim 6-3 in the final minutes to head into the locker room with the five point advantage. WPU was led by Jordan Fowler (East Orange, NJ) with nine points in the first 20 minutes of play. The Pioneers combined hitting 9-26 (35%) while Ramapo hit 12-24 (50%).

The lead changed three times in the opening 7:15, but after the game's sixth tie at 12:45, 39-39, the Pioneers took complete control with a 6-0 run sparked by Canty at 12:39, to gain a 45-39 advantage with 10:54 on the clock. The Pioneers slowly built on their lead out scoring Ramapo 36-20 in the final minutes to take the 81-59 victory. 15 of Canty's 17 points came in the final half when he shot 4-5 from the field and 7-8 from the charity stripe. The team combined hitting 21-34 (62%) ahead of Ramapo's 8-27 (29%). Wesley added a team leading nine points in the second half.

On the night, Canty finished with 17 and Courtney Nelson (Newark, NJ) and Fowler each added 15 of their own. Nelson grabbed five steals and Fowler pulled down six rebounds. The Pioneers shot 50% in the win with 30 field goals on 60 attempts. Ramapo finished the day hitting 20-51 (39%) from the field. Wesley led the Roadrunners with 25 points and rookie Garret Thiel (Middletown, NJ) contributed eight.

The Roadrunners return to action on Tuesday, February 17th when they face non-conference foe CCNY, home at 7:00 PM. William Paterson takes on Montclair State at home on February 18th at 8:00 PM.
