Mahwah, NJ: The last minute of the game fell in William Paterson's hands after three consecutive Roadrunner turnovers allowed the Pioneers to take control and grab the victory, 66-60. William Paterson improves to 13-3 overall and 5-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference while the Roadrunners fall to 7-8 overall, 2-3 in the conference.
After a 10-10 tie ball game at 14:05, the Roadrunners went on a 15-3 run to take a 25-13 lead with 5:15 to go in the half. The run was sparked by two good free throws from rookie
Ahmad Hassan (Edgewater, NJ) who hit a three-pointer off a dish from
Omar Alston (Carteret, NJ) on the back end of the run to take the 12 point edge.
Andre Kenny (Jersey City, NJ) followed with a free throw to go up 13. William Paterson finally got back on the board with 2:30 left to play when Chris Brown (Newark, NJ) and Joseph Ellis (Newark, NJ) hit a jumper and a free throw respectively to close the gap, 26-16. Each team netted two more points to head into the intermission with Ramapo on top by ten, 28-18.
All players were held under double digit points with Kenny as Ramapo's top performer with seven points and WPU'S leader as Gabriel Paul (Hillside, NJ) and Brown with four each. Ramapo hit 12-30 from the field and the Pioneers went 7-31 in the half.
Jason Cameron (Cliffside Park, NJ) opened the second half with a field goal from behind the arc and Alston followed with a jumper before the Pioneers connected two baskets and a free throw off two Ramapo turnovers to come within four, 30-26, with 17:17 to play. Another turnover by the Roadrunners resulted in a foul and two good free throws and the Pioneers trailed by only two. Scott Spieker (Marlton, NJ) hit Ramapo's third three-pointer of the game grabbing a 44-33 advantage with 9:39 left in the game. The Pioneers went on a mini 4-0 run and senior
Jason Marshall (Hackensack, NJ) drained a long ball giving Ramapo a 47-37 lead. Seve Cousins (Haledon, NJ), Cameron, and Joey Spiegel (Teaneck, NJ) put together three baskets including a three and after one good free throw, WPU's Ouedraogo hit a jumper to tie the game at 47 with just under six minutes to go. Over the next two and a half minutes the two teams went back-to-back with Ramapo leading by two, 57-55, leading into a William Paterson timeout with 1:56 left to play. A free throw for WPU and a three-pointer from Wesley and Spiegel respectively put the teams just one point apart with 1:11 on the clock. Cameron gave the Pioneers a one point edge, 61-60, after a Roadrunner turnover, and after a second Roadrunner turnover and a foul, Cameron put the Pioneers up by three with 13 ticks to go. A final turnover and two more fouls allowed WPU to sink three final baskets from the line to take the 66-60 victory.
Cousins finished with a team high 15 points and Cameron and Spiegel sunk 14 apiece. Spigel grabbed five steals in the win. Alston posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 boards and Hassan finished the night on top of all Roadrunners with 15 points. The Pioneers shot 37% hitting 22-59 while Ramapo went 25-55 (46%). Ramapo had 31 turnovers in the loss while WPU committed only 14 of their own.
The Roadrunners only stepped to the line five times in the entire game, all in the first half, to WPU's 28 opportunities. From the line the Pioneers were 4-9 in the first half and 15-19 in the second while Ramapo saw three good free throws on five attempts in the first and 0-0 in the final 20 minutes of play. The fouls leaned towards the Pioneers 23-13 for the game.
Ramapo heads to Rowan University on Saturday, January 26th to continue NJAC play at 3:00 PM while William Paterson hosts the College of New Jersey at 3:00 PM
