NEWARK, NJ – Juniors Chadd Barnes (Newark, NJ/University HS) and David Cherry (Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic) and sophomores Deshawn Singleton (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) and Phil Barnes (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) combined for 64 points to lead Rutgers-Newark to a 78-61 New Jersey Athletic Conference win over Ramapo in The Golden Dome.
Cherry, who tallied 15 points and six rebounds, had seven points during a decisive 13-2 run which staked the Scarlet Raiders (9-7, NJAC 3-2) to a 62-46 lead with 7:24 remaining. Ramapo (7-7, NJAC 2-2) got no closer than a dozen points the rest of the way.
Singleton muscled for 12 of his 16 points as Rutgers-Newark battled its way to a 40-28 lead at intermission. His layup gave the Raiders a 36-22 lead with 2:32 left in the opening half. Singleton made seven of 12 shots from the floor for the night and collared six rebounds as the Raiders controlled the backboards, 44-35.
Barnes, who finished with a game-high 17 points, seven assists and three steals, had nine points during the opening half while the other Barnes – the sophomore forward – came off the bench for seven of his 16 points and seven of his game-high 12 rebounds in just 10 minutes of play before the break.
Junior guard
Tim Wesley (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) paced the Roadrunners with a dozen points off the bench while senior forward
Assad Shaakir (Newark, NJ/St. Patrick's) barely missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Sophomore forward
Andre Kenny (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) notched 11 points and led Ramapo with three assists while junior guard
Desmond Sanders (Newark, NJ/St. Patrick's) chipped in nine points and two assists.
Rutgers-Newark will host New York City College of Technology in the final non-conference doubleheader of the season this Monday in The Golden Dome. The women's game begins as 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30.
