Mahwah, NJ: The Roadrunners snapped a two-game losing streak in the opening round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference dropping the Lions of TCNJ, 77-61. Ramapo improves to 19-7 overall while The College of NJ finishes the year 12-14. Ramapo advances to play Rowan University, the #1 seed in the South Division, Wednesday night at 7:00 PM.
In a slow paced, low scoring first half, the Roadrunners shot 48%, 13-27, from the floor taking a slight 31-28 edge heading into the intermission. The Lions got on the board quick to open the game when Brian Halligan (Delran, NJ) hit a three-pointer to jump ahead, 3-0. After
Omar Alston (Carteret, NJ) hit a jumper to come within one, the Lions forced four Ramapo turnovers over the next five minutes to take a 12-8 lead. The Roadrunners took over from there going on an 11-0 run to jump ahead 19-12, their biggest lead of the half. The run was sparked by senior guard
Antoine Pryor (Elizabeth, NJ) who hit a three at 12:24 and Mark Aziz (Hackettstown, NJ) ended the run with eight minutes to go in the half to close the gap to five, 19-14. The Lions continued to slowly chip away on Ramapo's lead heading into the lockers just three points shy. TCNJ went 9-20 (45%) in the half behind Halligan's eight points. Alston was on top of all Roadrunners hitting 5-7 for ten first half points.
TCNJ opened the second half on a 5-2 run topped off by a Jeff Molinelli (Pennington, NJ) three-pointer to tie the game at 33 before Ramapo's
Assad Shaakir (Newark, NJ) sparked a 9-0 run to take a 42-33 lead. The Roadrunners spread their lead to as many as 18 in the second half taking complete control to earn the, 77-61 victory. Ramapo went 4-7 from the arc with Pryor sinking three of the seven. TCNJ hit 12-34 (35%) in the final half and Ramapo went 16-24 (67%).
Pryor led all Roadrunners with 18 points hitting 6-10 from the floor and 4-8 from the arc while
Tim Wesley (Jersey City, NJ) netted 16 points and Alston and Shaakir recorded 13 and 11 respectively. Shaakir posted a double-double with 11 rebounds and grabbed a team high four steals in the win. Halligan led the Lions with 17 points and five steals while Molinelli and Aziz netted 12 and ten points respectively. Corey Gilmore (South Plainfield, NJ) dished out a team high six assists in TCNJ's final game of the 2006-2007 season.
