Mahwah, NJ: The Red Hawks of Montclair State held off Ramapo tonight at the Bradley Center, 71-68 to improve to 11-12 overall and 4-8 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. With the loss Ramapo suffers their third loss in the conference (9-3), and falls to 18-6 overall.
Montclair got out of the gate ahead of Ramapo taking a quick eight point lead just under four minutes into the game, 12-4, behind rookie Charles Miller (Linden, NJ) who netted two baskets, pulled down three boards, and dished out two assists. Miller went into the intermission with 11 points hitting 4-5 from the floor and 3-4 from the line. He led the team in rebounds with six and assists with two. The team went 13-25 hitting 52% of their shots while Ramapo went 14-39, 36% in the half. All Roadrunners were held to single digit points with
Tim Wesley (Jersey City, NJ) coming out on top recording eight. Montclair spread their lead to as many as ten and Ramapo slowly chipped away at their lead heading into the intermission just five points, 30-35 behind Montclair.
The Red Hawks opened the second half on a 7-2 run to grab a ten point lead and held their lead until the 5:21 mark when junior
Ahmad Mosby (Jersey City, NJ) hit a jumper to tie the game at 61. The Roadrunners' only lead of the game was at 19:37 (2-0) and 18:24 (4-3) of the first half. They fought to come within one in the final minute but were unable to capitalize falling to the Red Hawks by three, 71-68. Miller finished the night the way he started sinking five points in the final 00:24. The Red Hawks shot 11-25 (44%) in the second half over Ramapo's 14-36 (39%).
Miller posted a double-double in the win hitting 8-11 from the floor and 12-16 from the line for 28 points. Miller pulled down 12 rebounds and dished out two assists in the win. Kevin Dudley (Willingboro, NJ) was the only other Red Hawk in double digits with 15 points and John Byrne (East Brunswick, NJ) sunk nine. For Ramapo, Wesley came out on top with 16 points and
Assad Shaakir (Newark, NJ) followed with 15 of his own.
Antoine Pryor (Elizabeth, NJ) sunk 13 and Mosby pulled down a team high 12 boards. The Roadrunners hit 28-75 (37%) in the loss while Montclair went 24-50 (48%).
Ramapo plays their final regular season game of the 2006-2007 season on Saturday, February 17th when they host New Jersey City University at 3:00 PM. Montclair takes on Rutgers Newark at 7:30 PM in Newark.
