ROADRUNNERS OPEN 2007 SEASON 3-0 AT BRADLEY CENTER IN MAHWAH

Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College men's volleyball team opened the 2007 season at the Bradley Center in Mahwah going 3-0 on the day hosting Newbury College, Villa Julie, and Baruch College.

Match 1: (Court #1) The Roadrunners opened the year with a 3-0 shutout victory over Newbury (30-26, 30-22, 30-28) to improve to 1-0 overall behind sophomores Shane Donohue (Freehold Twp., NJ) and Todd Elsasser (Barnegat, NJ) who recorded 15 and 11 kills respectively hitting a combined 26-46. Junior Brendan Whitford (Lyndhurst, NJ) and rookie Elvis Cabrera (Clifton, NJ) recorded nine kills each and senior setter Jordan Roldan (Jersey City, NJ) dished out a team high 49 assists. Dan Sempkowski (East Brunswick, NJ) led the defense with eight digs. The Roadrunners hit .292 (54-113 with 21 errors) over Newbury's .162 (37-99 with 21 errors). Newbury's Ken McNeeley (Forest Hill, MD) led the Nighthawks hitting 11-30 with three errors (.400) while Bryan McDermand (Palatine, IL) recorded nine kills. Matthew Hartmann (Feeding Hills, MA) dished out a team high 23 assists and Adam Sweeney (Haverhill, MA) led the defense with six digs.

Match 1: (Court #2) Villa Julie matched-up with Baruch posting a 3-0 (30-28, 30-25, 30-17) victory to open the year at 1-0. Villa Julie was led by Zach Drew (Baltimore, MD) who recorded 12 kills on 16 attempts. JR Jackson (Havre de Grace, MD) recorded ten kills and Joe Tayge (Quakertown, PA) dished out 33 assists in the win. Baruch was led by Daniel Levent (Forest Hills, NY) with ten kills and Radek Wyrwas (Bialystok, Poland) dished out a team high 23 assists. Chris Bustos (Davao, Phillipines) led the defense with five digs.

Match 2: (Court #1) Ramapo dropped the Bearcats of Baruch College, 3-0 (30-22, 30-19, 30-28) to improve to 2-0 on the day. Ramapo hit .385 in the match posting 50 kills on 91 attempts with 15 errors while Baruch recorded 36 kills on 95 attempts with 21 errors hitting .158. Whitford and Sempkowski each recorded 13 kills leading the team while Donohue posted 11 of his own. Roldan dished out 33 assists and rookie Matt Scott (Edsion, NJ) contributed 12 in the win. Defensive specialist J Steinhauer (West Windsor, NJ) led the way with six digs and Whitford recorded a team high six blocks with three solo. For the Bearcats, Levent posted 16 kills and Wyrwas contributed 31 assists.

Match 2: (Court #2) Newbury fought back to defeat Villa Julie, 3-1 (27-30, 30-22, 30-25, 30-22) after dropping game one to improve to 1-1 on the day. The Nighthawks were led by McNeeley who recorded 12 kills, 13 blocks and six digs while Rick Beeman (Freedom, PA) dished out 29 assists in the win. Nicholas Horrocks (New Bedford, MA) led the defensive end with 20 digs. Villa Julie's Jackson posted 24 kills and Tayge dished out a team high 36 assists in the team's loss. David Lloyd (Germantown, MD) and Steve Grossnickle (Perry Hall, MD) combined for 21 digs.

Match 3: (Court #1) The Roadrunners wrapped up the day posting a 3-0 (30-26, 30-23, 30-22) over Villa Julie to go 3-0 on the day. Ramapo's Whitford led the way once again with 11 kills while Roldan dished out 35 assists and led the defense with four digs. Whitford added four digs of his own and blocked a team high six balls. The Roadrunners went 41-78 with 24 errors (.218) while Villa Julie hit 43-96 with 29 errors (.146). Villa Julie's Jackson posted 14 kills and Brett Keller (Perry Hall, MD) recorded 11 while Tayge dished out a team high 40 assists. Ryan McDowell (Germantown, MD) posted six total blocks in the loss.

Match 3: (Court #2) Newbury wrapped up the day defeating Baruch, 3-0 (30-20, 30-28, 30-18) to improve to 2-1 on the year. Newbury was led by McDermand with 14 kills and McNeeley added five in the win. McNeeley recorded ten blocks and four digs. McDermand recorded 15 digs and Horrocks led the way with 21 digs of his own. Baruch was led by Levent with 13 kills while Steve Rouse (New York, NY) added ten of his own. Wyrwas recorded 26 assists and two blocks in the loss.

The Roadrunners return to action on Thursday, January 25th when they travel to Yeshiva University for a NECVA Metro match-up.
