SHAAKIR SINKS THREE-POINTER WITH SIX SECONDS TO PLAY TO PUSH RAMAPO OVER RUTGERSNEWARK, 91-90

Mahwah, NJ: The Roadrunner men's basketball team posted a 91-90 victory over Rutgers Newark at the Bradley Center tonight in Mahwah. The Roadrunners improve to 10-3 overall, 3-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference while the Scarlet Raiders fall to 10-3 overall, 2-1 in the conference.

Ramapo opened to a ten point lead heading into the intermission, 50-40, after sinking 20-32 (63%) from the field and forcing 11 Rutgers Newark turnovers. After opening to a 5-5 start just under three minutes into the game, Ramapo's Omar Alston (Carteret, NJ) sparked a 13-0 run to take a 13 point edge over the Scarlet Raiders. Ramapo continued to spread their lead to as many as 17 before Rutgers Newark slowly chipped away closing the gap to single digit points, 36-45 with 1:16 left to play. Rutgers Newark came within eight but with 36 seconds to go, Ahmad Mosby (Jersey City, NJ) hit a three-pointer to jump ahead by 11. Ryan Gillens (Newark, NJ) wrapped up the first half with a good free throw to end the half, 40-50 behind Ramapo.

Mosby led the Roadrunners with 13 points in the half while Tim Wesley (Jersey City, NJ) sunk nine of his own. Mosby dished out three assists and grabbed two steals in the half. Chadd Barnes (Newark, NJ) and Philippe Slater (Newark, NJ) each contributed 11 points for the Scarlet Raiders while Barnes grabbed a team high three steals. The Raiders hit 13-26 (50%) in the first 20 minutes of play.

In the final 20 minutes of play, Rutgers Newark continued to chip away on Ramapo's lead coming within one point at 13:45, 62-61, off a jumper by Barnes. Barnes hit a three-pointer just 40 seconds later to tie the game at 64 for the first time since the first three minutes in the game. Ramapo held on to a slight lead until 9:09 when Barnes hit a lay up to take a one point, 71-70 edge. In the final minutes of play the lead changed nine times with Ramapo grabbing a one point edge with six seconds left to play when Assad Shaakir (Newark, NJ) hit a three to jump ahead by one. The Roadrunners forced a last second turnover taking the game 91-90 in NJAC action in Mahwah.

Mosby finished with a team high 27 points hitting 10-17 from the field including three three-pointers. Mosby grabbed three steals and pulled down five rebounds while Shaakir wrapped up the night pulling down six boards and netting 17 points of his own. Alston netted 12 points and Antoine Pryor (Elizabeth, NJ) and Wesley each contributed 11 in the win. For the Scarlet Raiders, Barnes finished on top with 30 points hitting 12-21 including six three-pointers and Quran Wimberley (Newark, NJ) sunk three three-pointers of his own hitting 5-10 from the field for 17 points. Wimberley grabbed a team high four steals and four rebounds in the loss. The Scarlet Raiders shot 58% in the second half for a game total 55%, 34-62 while the Roadrunners finished the second half hitting 48% of their shots for a game ending 56%, 32-57.

The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, January 13 when they travel to William Paterson for a 3:00 PM start while the Raiders travel to the New York City College of Technology for a 4:00 PM start.
