Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College volleyball team played host to New Jersey City in a NECVA Metro rival match-up at the Bradley Center in Mahwah. Ramapo posted a 3-2 (30-25, 19-30, 30-20, 27-30, 12-15) loss falling to 19-7 overall, 8-5 in the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association while NJCU improves to 12-4 overall, 5-3 in the conference.
The Roadrunners grabbed game one, 30-25 behind rookie
Shane Donohue (Freehold Twp., NJ) with seven kills while the Gothic Knights bounced back to take game two, 30-19 behind Robert Griffiths (Edison, NJ) who recorded six kills of his own on 12 attempts with no errors. Donohue posted six kills in the second game and Nicholas Kalbach (Old Bridge, NJ) followed with two. The first game went with Ramapo hitting .222 over NJCU'S .138 while game two flip-flopped with NJCU hitting down 14-33 for a .303 percentage. Ramapo hit negative in their game two loss with 11 kills on 40 attempts with 13 hitting errors.
The Roadrunners bounced back hitting .351 in game three for a 30-20 victory to jump ahead two games to one. Sophomore
David Ross (Perth Amboy, NJ) recorded six kills on eight attempts with only one error while
Brendan Whitford (Lyndhurst, NJ) added six kills of his own. The Gothic Knights hit .108 in game three behind Griffiths' and Damon LaSalle's (Clifton, NJ) eight kills combined. Ramapo posted 21 kills in the win ahead of NJCU'S ten.
New Jersey City took game four to push the match to a fifth game. Ramapo held a three point lead, 7-4 before NJCU fought back to close the gap and tie the game at eight points each. The score flip-flopped for the remainder of the game with Ramapo ahead most of the way until NJCU took the lead and pushed ahead to take the game, 30-27.
Kevin Rodgers (Clifton, NJ) led the Gothic Knights with six kills while Donohue added six of his own to lead the Roadrunners. Ramapo hit .106 behind NJCU'S .196. Jersey City jumped early in game five and the Roadrunners were unable to catch back up falling short 12-15 in game five for a 2-3 match loss.
Griffiths led the Gothic Knights with 21 kills and Rodgers followed with 15 kills of his own. Maurice Washington (Orlando, FL) dished out a team high 54 assists becoming the second player at NJCU to record 3,000 career assists. Ramapo's
Jairo Sierra (Fair Lawn, NJ) and
Jordan Roldan (Jersey City, NJ) combined for 66 assists in the team's loss. Ramapo hit .131 in the match with 73 kills on 183 attempts with 49 errors while Jersey City recorded 60 kills on 167 attempts with 31 errors hitting .174 in the win.
The Roadrunners return to action on Monday, March 13th when they host York College at 8:00 PM. The Gothic Knights will travel to Polytechnic tomorrow for an 8:00 PM match start.
