Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College men's volleyball team placed host to NECVA conference rival SUNY New Paltz and Brooklyn College today at the Bradley Center in Mahwah in a tri-match-up. The Roadrunners fell short 3-1 to SUNY New Paltz in the first match of the day while New Paltz added a second win, 3-0 over Brooklyn. Ramapo finished the day with a 3-0 victory over Brooklyn to improve to 8-1 overall.
Match 1: New Paltz 3, Ramapo 1 (30-26, 30-21, 21-30, 32-30)
Ramapo fell behind 0-4 then 3-8 to start the first game of the match-up, but closed the gap and tied the game 8-8 before New Paltz took control once again and led for the rest of the game finishing 30-26 over Ramapo. Jamie Kellogg (Scio, NY) led the team offensively with six kills for the Hawks. In the second game, New Paltz led the entire way and by as many as nine grabbing a 2-0 lead with a 30-21 second game win. Brendan Whitford (Lyndhurst, NJ) kills and five
J Steinhauer (West Windsor, NJ) digs. In the fourth game, New Paltz came out on top with a 32-30 victory for the 3-1 NECVA Metro conference victory to improve to 5-2 overall, 3-1 in the conference. Ramapo posts their first loss of the year falling to 7-1 overall, 2-1 in the conference.
Ramapo was led by Whitford with 13 total kills on 34 attempts while rookie
Shane Donohue (Freehold Twp, NJ) and Steinhauer added ten kills apiece. Rookie setter
Jairo Sierra (Fair Lawn, NJ) dished out a team high 22 assists and
Jordan Roldan (Jersey City, NJ) added 17 in the loss. Defensively Steinhauer posted 17 digs and
Marko Benito (Jersey City, NJ) followed with nine. Whitford and Nicholas Kalbach (Old Bridge, NJ) posted four total blocks each. For the Hawks, Kellogg finished the match with 19 kills and Ryan Bullard (Smithtown, NY) added 14 in the win. Jeff Lee (Clifton Park, NY) also hit double digits with ten kills and rookie setter Matt Weingarten (East Moriches, NY) dished out a team high 50 assists. Bullard led defensively with 11 digs and four total blocks.
Match 2: New Paltz 3, Brooklyn0 (30-21, 30-20, 30-20)
New Paltz faced off with Brooklyn College in the second match of the day earning a . The Hawks jumped out to a nine point (22-13) lead in game one and stayed on top for the rest of the way leading by as many as ten defeating the Bridges, 30-21 for a 1-0 lead. Lee led the team with six kills while Kellogg added four of his own. The Hawks were led by Jason Chandler (Spencerport, NY) and Mark Blair (Point Pleasant, NJ) with three kills each in the second game leading the team to a 30-20 win for the 2-0 lead before Brooklyn jumped out to a 4-0 lead, then a 6-3 lead in the third of the best out of five match. New Paltz quickly took control and regained the lead, 11-10 and ran away with it for a 30-20 victory beating Brooklyn in three, 3-0. New Paltz was led by Lee with six total kills while Kellogg and Blair added four each. Jarrett Rubin (Lido Beach, NY) dished out a team high 21 assists. Brooklyn's Luke Haywood (Brooklyn, nY) led the way with seven kills and Tarares Hubbard (Brooklyn, NY) dished out 17 assists in the loss.
Match 3: Ramapo 3, Brooklyn0 (30-18, 30-23, 30-9)
Ramapo wrapped up the day with a 3-0 win over Brooklyn. In the first game, Ramapo posted a 30-18 victory behind Donohue who recorded four kills. Whitford added three and Sierra dished out a team high 11 assists. Benito led the defense with three digs in the game. In the second game of the match-up Ramapo added a 30-23 victory before taking the third game 30-9 for a 3-0 shut out victory. Donohue finished the match with 13 kills on 20 attempts with six digs while Whitford added nine of his own. Sierra finished with a team high 29 assists.
The Roadrunners return to action on Tuesday, February 7th when they host NECVA Metro conference rival Mt. St. Vincent at 8:00 PM.
