Newark, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team split a NJAC doubleheader on the road today against Rutgers-Newark University. The Roadrunners (24-9 overall, 10-4 NJAC) won their 12th straight in game one with a 2-1 victory while the Scarlet Raiders (12-20 overall, 4-10 NJAC) took game two, 8-0.
Game #1: Ramapo 2, Rutgers-Newark 1
John Hacker (5-1 overall) struck out seven and did not walk a batter while scattering eight hits in 8.2 innings of work.
Cody Quagliato entered in relief with runners on first and third and struck out the final hitter to end the game and secure his third save of the season.
The game remained scoreless until Ramapo struck first in the top of the eighth inning.
Zach Novakowski tripled to right-center field with one out before
Nick Pellegrino laced a double down the left field line to plate the game's first run. Pellegrino moved to third on an infield ground out before Eric Knap drove him in with an RBI single, 2-0. In the bottom of the ninth, the Scarlet Raiders plated one run with two outs. Malik Little singled home pinch-runner Reid Duffus to cut the Ramapo lead in half before Quagliato got the strikeout to end the threat.
Knapp and
Braden Schappert each led the team at the plate finishing 2-4 while Knapp and Pellegrino collected one RBI each.
Game #2: Rutgers-Newark 8, Ramapo 0
The Scarlet Raiders scored in the first three innings for a 7-0 lead while they added their final run in the fifth inning. Little singled home two RBI to get Rutgers-Newark on the board in the first while a run came home on a Ramapo error in the second. In the third inning the Scarlet Raiders scored four runs highlighted by an RBI single from Daniel Fedorco. Joseph Bernado drove in Trevor Wallace with an RBI double for the 8-0 score.
Joshua Warming (3-6 overall) struck out five, walked two and scattered three Roadrunner hits in seven innings of work. Luke Hagen worked the final two innings with two strikeouts and one walk and did not surrender a hit.
For the Roadrunners,
Thomas Schlaline (2-2 overall) suffered the loss as he let up seven hits and seven runs (three earned) in 2.2 innings of work. He struck out two and walked one.
Kevin Penny worked 4.1 innings as he struck out five, walked one and surrendered five hits and one run.
Ramapo returns to action on Tuesday, April 21st when they host Centenary University in a non-conference game at 3:30 PM.
