Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team won a 4-2 NJAC game over New Jersey City University today at Jeff Maund Field. The Roadrunners move to 18-8 overall and 5-3 in the NJAC while the Gothic Knights drop to 7-17-1 overall and 0-8 in the league.
The Roadrunners plated their first run in the fifth inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Zach Novakowski lifted a sac fly to right field to plate
Brandon Tauber. In the sixth,
Casey Chiola scored an unearned run on an infield error for a 2-0 lead. NJCU cut the Ramapo lead in half by scoring one run in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Dovid Solomon. In the eighth,
Colin Kassai was able to race home on a failed pick-off attempt at third base as the throw sailed wide.
Eric Knapp later scored on a sac fly from
Julian Caruso to extend the team's lead, 4-1. The Gothic Knights made it interesting in the ninth inning scoring one run to cut the lead in half once again. Carlo Lalomia, Jr. recorded back-to-back strikeouts in the top of the ninth before Collin Elam and Matthew Ferber each singled to plate the team's second run. Kevin Penny induced a strikeout swinging to end the threat and earn his first save of the season.
Michael Zalinkanskas (6-1) struck out 12, walked four and surrendered just two hits and one run scored in seven complete innings of work. Lalomia struck out three, walked two and gave up three hits and one run in 1.2 innings of relief. Ramapo collected nine hits in the game as Caruso (2-4) and Tauber (2-2) each posted two hits in the game while five other Roadrunners each recorded one.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow afternoon on the road at Rutgers-Camden University with a NJAC doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 11:30 AM.
