Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team came back to defeat the United States Merchant Marine Academy this afternoon, 10-5. The Roadrunners improve to 12-7 overall while the Mariners move to 7-6 on the year.
The bases were loaded in the second inning as
Brandon Tauber was hit by a pitch to force home
Nick Pellegrino, 1-0.
Braden Schappert later scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of
Will Egner for a 2-0 score. In the third inning, Schappert drove in
Jack Tallent with an RBI groundout before Pellegrino later scored on a wild pitch, 4-0. USMMA scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth before taking a 5-4 lead in the sixth on a two-run home run from Axel Prechel. In the bottom of the sixth inning Ramapo tied the game at five.
Zach Barbash drew a walk before moving to second on Tauber's sac bunt.
Will Egner walked and
Julian Caruso was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Julian Schultz bounced into a fielder's choice to shortstop which allowed Barbash to score, 5-5.
Kevin Penny entered for the Roadrunners in the top of the seventh and held USMMA scoreless as the team was able to take the lead in their half of the inning. Schappert reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second when Barbash walked before Tauber laced a double to right field which allowed Schappert to come around and score, 6-5. Ramapo added four runs in the eighth inning.
Julian Schultz was hit by a pitch and stole second before Tallent drew a walk. Pellegrino then drove in both runners with a double to left field, 8-5. Schappert drove a single through the infield as Pellegrino scored, 9-5. Schappert then stole second and stole third while the throw sailed wide allowing him to score, 10-5.
Greg Guzman closed out the game for Ramapo in the top of the ninth inning and held the Mariners scoreless.
Kevin Penny (2-1) earned the win in relief for the Roadrunners as he struck out two, walked none and gave up no hits in two innings. Guzman struck out one in the final inning for Ramapo in relief.
Eldon Lempa started the game on the mound for the Roadrunners as he struck out three, walked four and surrendered five hits and three runs in four innings of work. Pellegrino, Schappert and Tauber each drove in two RBI for the Roadrunners.
Ramapo returns to the diamond when they travel to Kean University for the NJAC home-and-home series on Thursday, April 2nd at 3:30pm.
