Purchase, NY: The Ramapo College women's lacrosse team used a strong second half to defeat Manhattanville University, 19-14. The Roadrunners improve to 2-1 overall while the Valiants drop to 0-2 on the year.
The two teams played a tight game as Ramapo took a one goal lead into halftime, 9-8. The Roadrunners saw themselves down 8-7 with 1:14 on the clock before the Roadrunners hit the back of the net twice to end the quarter up 9-8.
Leah Whitney scored with 30 seconds on the clock off a pass from
Erin Smeilus while
Meri Cassidy put the team up 9-8 with a goal off a pass from
Kassidy Baez. That goal gave the Roadrunners the lead for good in the game. In the third quarter, Ramapo tallied seven goals and held the Valiants to just one as they took a 16-9 lead into the final quarter of action.
Lexi Callari scored the first goal of the third off a pass from Cassidy before Smeilus and
Darrien Pennachio each posted an unassisted goal to go up 12-8. Pennachio took a pass from
Leah Whitney as the Roadrunners scored a player-up, 13-8. The Valiants scored their lone goal of the quarter with 10:19 on the clock before Callari and Smeilus teamed up for a goal with 7:25 remaining. Baez scored an unassisted goal as the Roadrunners were playing down a player before she teamed up with Cassidy for the final goal of the third quarter to extend the Roadrunner lead, 16-9. In the fourth, Pennachio hit the back of the net once again for the Roadrunners off a pass from Baez, 17-9. Mville scored back-to-back goals from Kaci Pierce and Mariella Manicchio before
Bethany Glaser scored with 7:18 remaining off a pass from Baez, 18-11.
Meri Cassidy would put in the final goal for the Roadrunners off a pass from Baez while the Valiants scored three goals to close out the game as Ramapo took the game 19-14.
Glaser, who collected three ground balls this afternoon, recorded her 100th career ground ball. She also posted one goal, three caused turnovers and two draw controls. Pennachio and Baez led the way with four goals each while Baez added a team high five assists, two ground balls and one caused turnovers. Pennachio posted one assist for five points in the game. Whitney led the team with 11 draw controls while she added two goals, two assists and two caused turnovers. Daniella Indomencio recorded 13 saves in the game in goal for Ramapo, including seven saves in the second quarter.
The Roadrunners return to action on Wednesday, March 10th when they play their home opener at the Athletic Center at 5pm against Farmingdale State College.
