Mahwah, NJ: The Farmingdale State College women's lacrosse team used a strong second half to defeat Ramapo College in non-conference action, 14-13. The Rams earn their first win of the season and move to 1-3 overall while the Roadrunners even their overall record at 2-2.
Ramapo opened up the game scoring the first three goals.
Meri Cassidy hit the back of the net unassisted before
Erin Smeilus connected with
Kassidy Baez for back-to-back goals, 3-0. The Roadrunners extended their lead to 9-3 as they scored four unanswered goals to end the second quarter. Emily Sohm scored first for the Rams in the second to get on the board before Smeilus scored back-to-back goals once again in the game. She tallied her third off a pass from Cassidy before scoring her fourth goal and 100th of her career off a pass from
Bethany Glaser, 5-1. Sohm added two more goals for the Rams before
Leah Whitney and
Lexi Callari each scored for Ramapo for a 7-3 lead. Glaser would score with 1:19 remaining and as time expired on the clock for the 9-3 first half lead. In the third, the Rams would come back with five goals of their own as the held Ramapo to just two.
Darrien Pennachio and Cassidy scored for the Roadrunners as they held an 11-8 lead at the end of three complete quarters of play. It was a back-and-forth final quarter of action as the Rams connected on six goals while holding Ramapo to two. Kailee Coppola scored two straight goals before Baez scored for the Roadrunners to hold a two-goal lead, 12-10. Sohm and Jordyn Neu each hit the back of the net for the Rams to tie the game with 9:37 remaining.
Bethany Glaser scored off a pass from Whitney with 5:11 on the clock to retake the lead, 13-12. Rylee Valenzano tied the game for the final time with a goal at 4:10 off a pass from Livingston before Sohm scored her seventh goal of the game with 1:37 remaining to go up one, 14-13. The Rams would gain control of the ball in the final 90 seconds of the game while Ramapo got the ball back with less than 20 seconds remaining while they could not get a shot off in the final moments of the game.
Whitney led the way with eight draw controls while adding two ground balls, two caused turnovers, on goal and one assist. Smeilus posted four goals, four ground balls, one caused turnovers and five draw controls.
Ashley Czeczuga posted four draw controls while adding four ground balls.
Daniella Indomenico posted 13 saves in the game for the Roadrunners as she faced 27 shots.
The Roadrunners return to action on March 15th when they travel to Mount Saint Mary College for a non-conference game at 11:00 AM.
