Mahwah, NJ: The Montclair State University women's lacrosse team defeated Ramapo College tonight at the Athletic Center Turf Field, 22-8. The Red Hawks move to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners even their overall record at 5-5 overall and stand at 0-2 in the conference.
Montclair State put in three goals in the first quarter before Ramapo got on the board with 10:45 on the clock with a goal from
Erin Smeilus off a pass from Eseme Espinosa. The pair teamed up once again with 6:53 on the clock this time Espinosa scoring her 13th of the season to cut the MSU lead in half, 2-4. MSU scored seven straight goals to close out the first quarter with a 12-2 lead. The Red Hawks scored the first two goals of the second before Espinosa scored in the final moments of the quarter for the team's third goal of the game. Montclair State held a 13-3 lead at halftime.
Smeilus added Ramapo's fourth goal to start to third off an assist from Kassidy Baex before MSU scored five more goals for an 18-4 lead.
Leah Whitney scored an unassisted goal with 2:14 left in the third while the Red Hawks closed out the quarter with one more goal, 19-5. Each team scored three goals in the fourth quarter. Espinosa, Whitney, and
Darrien Pennachio each hit the back of the net for the Roadrunners. Pennachio scored with 4:27 left on the clock off an assist from Smeilus for her first career goal.
Joey Grotkopf earned the win with two saves in 45 minutes of action while Kaeli Robinson posted one save in the final 15 minutes of action.
Daniella Indomenico and
Alyssa Curto each posted five saves for Ramapo in the game. Whitney added four goals and three caused turnovers while
Lauren Travaglini added three ground balls and four draw controls.
Bethany Glaser collected two ground balls while Espinosa led the team with three goals and one assist for four points.
The Roadrunners return to action on April 16th when they host the College of New Jersey in NJAC action at 6:00pm.
