LATE RALLY LEADS RAMAPO OVER STEVENS, 6-1

Mahwah, NJ:  The Ramapo College baseball team defeated the Stevens Institute of Technology this afternoon at Jeff Maund Field, 6-1. The Roadrunners improve to 5-2 overall while the Ducks fall to 3-7 overall.

Ramapo scored one run in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead early in the game. In the second, Jesse Swartout was hit by a pitch and later scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Weston Baronian. In the third, Zach Bailey walked with one out and advanced on two wild pitches before coming home on a bases loaded walk to Rob Klawans, 2-0. Stevens got on the board with one in the fifth before Ramapo broke open the game with four in the sixth inning.

After Ramapo reliever Jack Martin retired the side in the top of the sixth the Roadrunners tacked on four more runs for a 6-1 lead. Jack Tallent laced an RBI double down the right-field line before moving to second on a sac bunt from Melvin Matias. The bunt was misplayed by the Ducks allowing Tallent to advance to third and Matias to be safe at first base. Matias later stole second before Zack Bailey drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. John Higgins plated Tallent with a sac fly to center field before Matt Lalomia drove in Matias and Bailey with a hard-hit single to center field. On the throw home, Lalomia advanced to second and later stole third base before scoring on Swartout's sac fly.

The Roadrunners pitching staff held the Ducks scoreless the remainder of the game to come away with the big non-conference victory. Jack Martin (2-0) earned the win in relief, surrendering just two hits and striking out five in 3.1 innings of work. Dominick Ciani started on the mound as he struck out three and let up just four hits and one run in 4.2 innings. John Higgins struck out one and did not give up a hit as he came into pitch the ninth inning. Tallent led the way at the plate finishing 3-5 with one run scored while Bailey finished 2-2 with two runs scored and three walks. Klawans also collected two hits on two at-bats with one RBI and three walks.

Ramapo returns to action on Saturday, March 15th when they take on Ripon College at the Russ Matt Invitational at 9:15 AM.
