Newark, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team defeated Rutgers-Newark University in NJAC action tonight at the Golden Dome, 47-46. The Roadrunners move to 3-20 overall and 2-14 in the NJAC while the Scarlet Raiders drop to 3-20 overall and 0-16 in the league.
The Roadrunners started a 15-2 run in the third quarter that pushed into the fourth to overcome a Scarlet Raider lead. Ramapo's
Jocelyn Huancaya tallied a two-point basket late in the third as the Roadrunner went into the final quarter of action down just one, 31-30. A jumper from
Brianna Smith gave Ramapo a one-point lead before the team rattled off an 11-2 run over the next 6:14 of the game as they led by ten with 2:16 on the clock. A 9-2 run from Rutgers-Newark cut the Ramapo lead to just three with 51 seconds remaining capped off with a three-pointer from Renee Houston-Allen. Coming out of a Roadrunner timeout; Rutgers-Newark converted 1-2 from the free throw line while Ramapo did the same with just 37 seconds remaining and a 46-43 lead. Ramapo would miss a pair of free throws with 21 seconds on the clock which allowed the Scarlet Raiders to push the ball up the court off the defensive rebound. Quanajah Felder sank her second three-pointer of the game to tie the game at 46 with 15 seconds left. With 11 seconds remaining, Huancaya would sink 1-2 from the line to give Ramapo a 47-46 lead. Rutgers-Newark was able to get a shot off in the final second but it could not find the basket as Ramapo came away with the NJAC road victory.
Huancaya led the Roadrunners with 15 points including finishing 11-15 from the free throw line. She added two assists, three steals and two rebounds while
Emma Cartwright posted nine points, four blocks and four rebounds. Smith led the way with career highs of 15 rebounds and eight points.
Leilani Pena also posted a career high in points with eight which included two three-pointers. The Roadrunners shot 31% (15-48) from the floor, 22% (2-9) from the three-point line and 68% (15-22) from the free throw line.
Tracey Ilderis posted a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds while Raihanna Abdus-Salaam added a team high 11 points and four steals. The Scarlet Raiders shot 25% (16-63) from the field, 22% (4-18) from the three-point line and 62% (10-16) from the free throw line.
Ramapo returns to action at the Bradley Center on Saturday, Feb. 15th when they host Stockton University in a 3pm game. The Roadrunners will also honor senior Allison Ahern in a pre-game ceremony for Senior Day.
