Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College men's soccer team shutout NJAC rival New Jersey City University tonight at the Athletic Center Turf Field, 3-0. The Roadrunners improve to 8-2-3 overall and 3-1-1 in the NJAC while the Gothic Knights drop to 6-6-3 overall and 0-5-0 in the conference.
Gianfranco Ponce tallied five points in tonight's game as he scored the first two goals for the Roadrunners and assisted on the final goal of the game. Ponce scored 44 seconds into the first half off an assist from
Jalal Khalifeh to put Ramapo on the board, 1-0. In the second half, Ponce collected his ninth goal (50:36) of the season and his second of the game as he blasted a shot into the back of the net off a pass from
Ari Rosu. In the 67th minute,
Elton Mani recorded his second goal of the season, assisted by Ponce to push the Roadrunner lead, 3-0.
NJCU held a 9-5 edge in shots on goal in the game as
Nikolai Matthews recorded all nine saves including five in the second half. The Gothic Knights drew six corner kicks in the game while Ramapo recorded one. Matthews' nine saves set a new career high for the Ramapo netminder. For NJCU, Lennox Nunez collected two saves in the game.
Ramapo returns to action on Saturday, October 19th when they host NJAC rival Stockton University at the Athletic Center Turf Field at 1:00 PM.
