Newark, NJ: The Rutgers-Newark University men's basketball team came back to defeat Ramapo College, 61-57, tonight at the Golden Dome. The Scarlet Raiders move to 9-8 overall and 5-5 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners now stand at 12-5 overall and 6-4 in the conference.
In the first half, the score was tied four times the final time being with less than 8:30 left on the clock as Rutgers-Newark scored a jumper to make it 16 all.
Peter Gorman then came down the court for Ramapo and sank a three-pointer off a pass from
Shane Rooney for a 19-16 lead. Later in the first half, Ramapo would take a four point lead off a free throw from Rooney, 24-20, before Shy'he Jenkins-Floyd sank a three-pointer for the Scarlet Raiders. Rooney converted on a pair of free throws and a jumper to go up five, 28-23, with 2:43 left in the half. Following a pair of free throws from Rutgers-Newark,
Justin Bladen converted on an and-one play and
Jordan Myers scored a bucket in the paint to take an eight point lead with 34 seconds on the clock. Jenkins-Floyd scored a three-pointer as time expired in the half as Ramapo held a 33-38 lead.
In the second half, down by three with 11:16 on the clock
Anthony Corbo scored a jumper which sparked a 12-2 run which put Ramapo up seven with less than 5:15 left in the game, 55-48. A free throw from the Scarlet Raiders started a 10-1 run which included two big three-pointers from Russell Ayala as they took a 58-56 lead with 1:25 remaining. Ramapo's final point of the game came from Rooney on the free throw line while the Scarlet Raiders got a dunk off a steal from Travis Miles before Jenkins-Floyd made a free throw to cap off the victory, 61-57, with just four seconds remaining.
Rooney led the Roadrunners with his fifth double-double of the season as he scored 18 points and posted ten rebounds. Corbo and Gorman each contributed with 11 points while Raheem Anees added eight points. Ramapo shot 45% (20-44) from the floor, 33% (2-6) from the three-point line and 75% (15-20) from the free throw line.
For the Scarlet Raiders, Miles led the way with 18 points while Jenkins-Floyd tallied 16 points including three three-pointers. The team shot 39% (23-58) from the field, 33% (5-15) from the three-point line and 66% (10-15) from the free throw line.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, January 20th when they host Stockton University in a NJAC game at 1:00 PM at the Bradley Center.
