RAMAPO HOLDS DOWN STOCKTON IN NJAC TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND, 2-0

Mahwah, NJ: The #3 seeded Ramapo College softball team shutout #4 Stockton University in the first round of the 2023 NJAC Softball Tournament. The Roadrunners improve to 30-10-1 overall while the Ospreys drop to 19-18 overall.

This is the 8th time in program history the Roadrunners have collected 30 wins in a season and the second under head coach Bridgette Quimpo. Ramapo advances to game six of the tournament on Tuesday, May 9th, on the road at #2 the College of New Jersey. The Lions defeated #5 Kean University in a first round game, 3-0. Full tournament bracket and information can be found here.

Ramapo would get all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Mahogany Wheeler walked before Stockton made a throwing error following a ball put into play in the infield off the bat of Avery Bartolomeo putting runners on second and third. Avery Kontura took the second pitch of her at bat and sent a hard hit single into center field allowing both runners to score for a 2-0 lead.

The Roadrunners made three great defensive plays throughout the game to hold Stockton scoreless. In the top of the second, Nicole Cerasi made a leaping catch at the wall to take away an extra base hit with a runner in scoring position. In the top of the fourth, shortstop Katie Rygiel started a 6-3 double play as she fired to Bartolomeo at first base to end the inning. In the fifth inning with an Osprey in scoring position, Lilly James poked a single to left field while the runner came around third base to score. Ramapo left fielder Kori Gargiulo started a relay to Rygiel who fired home to Alexis Corra to apply the tag for the final out of the inning.

Ramapo starting pitcher Marissa DiPaolo worked back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh while she recorded a strikeout to end the game. DiPaolo (10-3) struck out two, walked three and surrendered just three hits in the complete game shutout. Kontura and Bartolomeo recorded Ramapo's two hits in the game.

Nerina Tramp (11-8) held the Ramapo offense to just two hits in the game, one in the first and one in the sixth, while she struck out five and walked just one. Stockton moves to game five of the tournament on Tuesday, May 9th. The Ospreys will take on the winner of the other first round game of #1 Rowan and #6 William Paterson.
